Some Newshub memories: For the first time in TV3’s history broadcasting the news since 1989, the news didn’t make it at 6pm.

On February 17th, 2020, a power outage hit the Flower St. studios, causing the 6pm bulletin to be delayed. In it’s replace was the replay of the 4pm bulletin. Just before 6:30pm, the 6pm bulletin made it to air, but unfortunately due to technical difficulties, the stories that was planned to air at 6pm was moved to the late night bulletin, which was aired later after 10pm. The weather segment went smoothly planned as usual without a hitch, with The Project starting 30 minutes earlier than planned. They also had technical problems too with their autocue not working.

Credit to @NaruTVMock recording the moment they came back on the air.

A very cool 2 part video documentary on TV3 and the history of 3 News from Newsroom’s The Detail Podcast.

I was wondering if Mike and Sam were going to do the last full week together, each of them have been off quite a bit in the lead up to the closure of Newshub.

I still consider these two a great duo, would have been interesting to see how it would have gone if they lasted after Paul Henry’s departure from breakfast. Would have been easy competition against the ‘chemistry’ of Petra and Corin.

One of the great unknowns of NZ TV.
You’d suggest Breakfast would still have won given how dominant TVNZ is but that combo was really finding its feet by the end of Sunrise.

Ollie’s done some really cool stuff since, which he might not have been able to had Sunrise been a success… so maybe it was a blessing in disguise?

RE: Breakfast. I said it before and I’ll say it again: that show has still never recovered from Paul Henry’s departure. Yes, it won the battle in the end… but only by default. I never understood what they were thinking back then with Corin and Petra. Such a strange pairing. I actually really liked Rawdon and Toni Street as a pair… so of course they were split up after a year! Nothing they’ve tried since has really worked (except maybe JC?). Anyway it’s all a load of crap (IMO only).

Quite surprised they’ve let it continue a week into a new month and the second half of the year. Would have thought Discovery would have liked their staff off the books at the end of the month.

I thought he might as well, but he may be using up annual leave before transitioning to his new job and may just pop up for the final day on friday.
