I think that links to what Jennings wrote. His view seems to be that this stripped back service will be almost as bad as not having a news service at all.
I think WBD are planning to leave Flower Street as soon as they are able. I believe the lease ends sometime next year. More than likely it’ll be knocked down for apartments.
As NuStraya said above, they don’t plan on staying at that site long-term and it was also mentioned recently above too. That and it would be more expensive for Stuff to use that massive set, guessing they’ll go with a much paired back version.
Fair, but a bulletin is surely better than none at all. Most people watch TVNZ anyway, and in the time of a major event or crisis, I know where i’d be turning.

I agree with what you think. Channel 5 in the UK is in a similar situation, because they just have a 5pm newscast. Would he complain about ITN not being able to provide breaking news for the channel, as he did with Stuff? (Although ITN probably has more resources than Stuff, so maybe not)
To be fair it’s very different in the UK… no one (and I mean no one) turns to Channel 5 specifically for news. Channel 5 only shows news because it has to.
A much better comparision would be ITV (whose news is also made by ITN… which has many, many more resources than Stuff). If a story is big enough then ITV will interrupt the regular schedule and go to ITN for coverage.
(In fact I’m quite sure TV3 even took some of ITV’s rolling coverage when the Queen died.)
In terms of production value, just because TVNZ has all the latest high tech equipment, I dont think the new kind of viewers which Stuff and WBD seem to be aiming for, will care if something is filmed on a mobile device. If thousands can scroll tik tok and insta/fb reels for hours, its clear its about the content not the fact its shot in 4k.
I have noticed that those who are a part of or have been a big part of the old fashioned 3 News/Newshub brands, are really showing why they have failed. They lost sight of whats most important, covering the news that viewers want in the way they wish to see it, not delivering the news we think you should hear and when you will see it.
Yes there will still be a 6pm news on Three, but ultimately I think what this bulletin has the option to do is watch what are their most clicked/read stories throughout the day on Stuff and the associated news sites, and offer an extended story piece of it at the newshour. If they take this approach then I am hoping it works out for all. It really makes me think Mark Weldons vision of a multi-media news platform is finally coming to light.
Ultimately I think this arrangement will benefit the stuff websites/sites
Agreed. I don’t think Stuff are aiming to produce a broadcast bulletin as we know it.
On an admin level, @OnAir, just curious as to what’s the plan as far as thread-management goes… start a new one for Stuff? It’s not really the same as Newshub, is it?
Haven’t talked it through but my preference is probably to start a new thread once we have a name and some more concrete details for the new news.
Then this thread can obviously be used up until the end of Newshub/AM etc.
What do you mean by ‘new kind of viewers’? Younger viewers? Because a lot of us tend not to sit down and watch the news at all… why would we, when it’s available all day online? You’re right, though, this new bulletin sounds like it will be very different to the Newshub of old. Whether that’s good or bad, I don’t know… good luck to Stuff, anyway. They’ll need it.
One thing I will say is that I think the hour at 6pm is dead on arrival… a) I don’t think Stuff will have sufficient content to fill that hour and b) a lot of people (at least in the big cities) aren’t home at 6. I get why Three want to keep the news in that slot, but I’m not sure directly competing with TVNZ is the way to go anymore. I think a 30 minute bulletin at 7 would be a really good alternative to the One News behemoth.
Yeah, and that’s all right on TikTok/Insta, which are viewed on 6 inch smartphones. On a 60 inch TV those reels look awful. I take your point, definitely, but personally I think TV news can and should provide more. So much more.
(At the very least, these Stuff reporters will need to learn to turn their phones around by 90 degrees… also, will we see a Stuff quiz on the 6pm news? )
19 years on the 6pm news is a bloody good run. IMO the best reader in NZ (sorry, Simon!) and it’ll be sad to see him go. In a way, quite fitting that his newsreading career is ending with Newshub. Good luck to him.
Agreed with others, be very surprising if Sam doesn’t transfer over to Stuff (probably Laura too). Will be good for there to be continuity. Wonder how they’ll do the weather…?
