Report on Newshub
Not sure but I guess it makes sense to start small and if it’s financially viable/making any money down the track, who knows, maybe they’ll look at other bulletins/content. I imagine everyone’s focus at the moment would just be getting the thing off the ground…
Ok fair enough, that makes sense. Don’t want to start huge and end up axing it all again. I wish them all the best with this new era for News on Three.
Outdated? Perfect for NZ then
Nope ya get Stuff all!
With Stuff launching a news hour, could this be the beginning of what future news on tv may look like? Steering away from traditional tv news with everything made for online?
Well this is all good news. Stuff’s not my favourite news outlet but I’d rather have them than no news at all. Long live StuffHub…?
One thing I’m surprised about is that the weekday bulletin is staying at an hour. I didn’t think Stuff had the capacity to make that much live TV each night? That second half might well be full of fluff (sorry, features).
Still, it sounds like a good move on the whole. And with Tova now at Stuff, there’s a chance she might pop back up on 3 from time to time… which I personally welcome as it would piss off everyone on Reddit but I digress.
(Also - mods: is it worth deploying the siren again? )
I’m pretty shocked Stuff has decided to take this on.
It had certainly felt like they had way too much on their plate to juggle also becoming a television news broadcaster, over the past 12 months.
Time will tell, but judging by the vagueness of the specifics (implying much of the detail hasn’t been worked out), this could be a very interesting road ahead.
Grieve said he had spoken to some Stuff journalists who were puzzled that an organisation that had been laying off journalists and other workers in the last few months had decided to take on a major new commitment.
I’m pretty shocked Stuff has decided to take this on.
So am I. I would be very interested to see the financial specifics of the new agreement. I suspect it’ll be a News First-style arrangement where Warners don’t pay a cent, but in return Stuff gets all the commercial revenue during the bulletin. If so it’s a gamble that could well pay off.
Saying that I’m still not convinced Three itself will last the distance… but we shall see.
Also this is intriguing:
Greive said Stuff would probably be keen to lock in a deal with Sky TV to produce a bulletin for it (as Newshub does at present) and that would generate such extra income.
Will be darkly amusing if News First is the only thing that continues relatively unscathed! If it continues in its current form (i.e. Newshub reports half an hour earlier) I don’t see why it couldn’t continue. It’s extra money for little more work, after all.
According to the Herald’s media column guy Shayne Currie , WBD will pay a flat annual fee to stuff and WBD get all the revenue
Maybe Stuff will call it the same name as its news podcast … “Newsable”
Sorry, but what’s News First?
The news at 5.30 on Sky Open (formerly known as Prime).
Yep. I’m guessing the video content they produce for the tv bulletin will be designed around complimenting Stuff’s online content which I’m assuming is how they’ll make it work. Kinda of back to front from the more traditional partnership where online publications have sourced video content from tv broadcasts etc to compliment their online text offering. Thinking the network 10/New Daily/InDaily partnership for example in Australia.
What even happened with those? They still around?
InDaily still includes a midday 10 News update in their daily email as well as posting the video in their news section.
Not sure about their other websites.
This quote is somewhat alarming:
Newsroom understands [Glen] Kyne has conceded there is currently no plan for how breaking news (outside of the news hour) will be covered. How, for instance, would Three cover a major earthquake if it happened outside the 6pm to 7pm hour? Networks traditionally interrupt programming to provide around-the-clock, or at least continuous prime time coverage of a disaster. It is unlikely Stuff could provide any significant sustained coverage. Viewers would simply defect to TVNZ and not all would return.
I mean, if you don’t have a news service then how would you be expected to cover major national events like that?
Not sure that’s quite as alarming given they proposed to shutter the entire newsroom and continue to operate without a news division entirely.
The Stuff deal is just a bonus, and remains to be seen whether it works or is viable long term.
What’s the point of this out sourced bulletin if they can’t provide breaking news. The more I read about this deal the more concerned I am about this actually working let alone lasting. I see also that WBD didn’t include using the old Newshub studios in the deal? What’s the point of letting a purpose built studio that launched in 2022 sit there and gather dust.
I believe it was mentioned above that Stuff would use the current Newshub set until they had built one of their own.
But why would you build a new set when there’s already one at Flower street that’s still new, surely they could of leased the studio back to Stuff.
