Was a bit of a shock flicking through the channels and seeing his face IN THE MORNING.
He’s done it before - but maybe not for a year or two. Guess when it fell under Mediaworks they were keen to promote Ryan as Duncan’s understudy, but now they don’t have that pool to call on.
Very interesting piece with Glen Kyne here, the boss of Discovery NZ.
Between AM, the Project, and all your other bulletins you now have at least six and a half hours of news running each day. At what point do you look at the rest of the schedule and see here a 24-hour news channel opportunity here?
One of the very first questions that I got asked globally by Discovery was, do you think we could stand up a 24 hour news channel in this market? And I think the answer is, yes. I’m certainly not announcing that we’re doing that today, by the way.
But I think the point here is that the desire to consume news and analysis and opinion is higher and every year seems to get higher still. So I definitely think there’s a space in the market to find dedicated news and current affairs content to service that need. We’re certainly not planning on doing that in 2022. But I think it’s going to be an ongoing discussion for us as a company.
Looking down the track a bit, with the Discovery/Warner merger, is there a potential for a Newshub news channel that leans on CNN content heavily maybe? Even lean on the CNN name? Just a thought.
Very interesting, and I would love to see it. But I’m a bit doubtful even of the commercial viability of their current expansion plans to be honest.
Most 24hr news channels are either cable subscription supported (CNN, FOX, MSNBC, Sky Aus / UK) or publicly funded (ABC / BBC / Al Jazeera). I think an FTA news channel could be a tough sell for advertiser $ - especially because things live coverage of press conferences etc are not well suited to ad breaks. But hopefully I’m wrong and this comes to fruition!!
My dream TV channel would be an ad-free ‘news channel lite’ with a mixture of live news - (with some in-depth evening bulletins with interviews etc), current affairs, and international news / features. Like a beefed up TVNZ7 / RNZ National hybrid… I even have an excel spreadsheet with my dream schedule lol.
Let’s hear it!
Duncan Garner may have Covid-19
Inevitable given the number of cases that celebrities would eventually start popping up in the numbers.
Surely the Newshub brand isn’t worth holding onto? They could easily relaunch the 3 News brand under, utilising CNN resources (even sub-branding). There are too many brands and confusion.
Why would they revert back to 3news? Its too old school having a channel focused/branded name for news. The brand they have in newshub allows it not to be tied to a channel, as will be the case when they are able to have Newshub at 8pm next year on one of the new channels.
Newshub as a brand and name still makes sense even if they wont be a part of radio with mediaworks anymore.
Under the current branding, it would be +HR=E NEWS… would you watch a bulletin called that? They’d have to rebrand the network for the 3NEWS moniker to return, surely.
How? They’ll have CNN, Three and a Newshub brand plus Discovery and Discovery plus. Don’t you think some consolidation will take place? Even replacing the Three name.
I like Eric Young as a newsreader but as host of a morning TV show I find him very slow and not that engaging.
I reckon give Ingrid Hipkiss a go as fill-in host, or maybe they don’t want anyone too good…
I don’t think there’s ever been a woman fill-in on AM, except for Ali Mau back in the Paul Henry days?
Ingrid could do it easily
I don’t think they need anymore consolidation. TVNZ didn’t need to prefix their channels with TVNZ and Discovery doesn’t need to do it with their channels. They could use the umbrella Discovery Network name if they want to, which would also help with Discovery+
IMO they don’t need the CNN name in their FTA news offering. With CNN already established in NZ on Sky, it is seen as foreign and American. Discovery needs needs stay as local as possible. Newshub has been around long enough where it’s uniquely kiwi
Because TVNZ 1 and TVNZ 2 are very different and it does not have a same network vibe because 1 is for the Oldies, 2 is for the Youths and Duke is for the Men, I hope Discovery does not do it as well
Yep - Three / 3 will always remain for as long as the channel exists.
If they’re going to stick with the Newshub brand I reckon they should rename the Prime News bulletin as ‘Newshub on Prime’ - would mean they don’t need to worry about covering up the Newshub branding.
(edit: spelling fix)
Something I haven’t seen before, Use of the News Studio on the AM Show.
Aziz was doing a sponsored segment with Anchor
Does Newshub have a new font? I was watching Newshub at the 11:30 and it looked different
