Newshub

I have grown to enjoy Laura on The Project so AM would have been perfect for her. News reading for a bulletin means ‘stick to the script’ rather than showcasing personality.

Toooo much news

News is really what streaming can’t do to the same effect, so they’re playing to their strength by beefing up their output there.

If it’s too much, people won’t watch. They’re essentially only adding the early service and the 8pm one on Gusto, using existing resources.

Quite a few announcements in primetime also, and an original series for ThreeNow too.

Now if only they’d have announced a new less ugly logo this morning

I’m wondering if they will just reply the 4:30pm Newshub show that airs on 3 and play it as “prime news” and Newshub at 8:30pm

I think news is really important to anchor a channel - see TV2. And mid evening has not been tried properly.

Re: Melissa Chan-Green - is going from weekend news and principal back-up weekdays 6pm to breakfast really a promotion?

Wonder if Sacha McNeill / Janika ter Ellen were considered for the weekend co-anchor role, they would appear to have more experience.

My main issue is them making staff do more work with the same resources for bulletins that are likely to be low rating.

The 8pm bulletin on Gusto is all very well but I can’t imagine they’ll want to pull eyeballs away from their reality tent pole so how compelling will it be?

Well that’s the thing isn’t it, they’re probably betting that the type of people watching reality tentpoles on the main channel won’t be the same as those watching a news bulletin at 8pm on a secondary channel - both of which I’m guessing probably skew a little older than Three.

It’s kind of like the thinking behind More4 (when it launched) having its own news bulletin which followed the main 7pm Channel 4 News.

A fair point…I just think of the way journalists are paid and treated in NZ. Hope it’s not stretching already tight resources even further.

Yes, they will get UK documentaries that will outbid Prime for. Secondly next year when Gusto launches Prime need to change of focus towards a younger audience similar to TVNZ 2 or Three

Expect fresh look Newshub 2022 and Prime needs a major makeover or a complete shutdown.

Oh wow, Jacob Slack has done some major work over the years. Expect good things to finally come out of Newshub’s graphics department.

They should bring back the Nightline strand in 2022. Call it Newshub Nightline or whatever.

Axing Nightline was arguably the first of a series of very poor decisions by Mediaworks’ management which almost destroyed its television news operation.

I don’ think axing Nightline almost destroyed its TV news operation. That sounds a little dramatic.

But I do agree, they should have kept it and there were many poor decisions that followed.

Yeah, like Newsworthy.

But I liked the Paul Henry show with Janika. Be great to see something like that again but these days they’d probably need to poach talent
