News Corp Australia

News Corp reported Q4 results today. Revenues in the quarter decreased US$238 million, or 29%, as compared to the same period in 2019, partly due to a US$34 million, or 1%, impact from the closure or transition to digital of regional and community newspapers in Australia. Revenues at News Corp Australia fell 11%. Digital subscribers for News Corp Australia’s mastheads were up at the end of the quarter compared to the same period the year prior, going from 566,600 to 738,300.

The Harvey Norman ad is bigger than the lead story. Does anyone still collect these cheap books that come with the News Corp papers? The Telegraph, Mercury, Courier Mail, and probably the other News Corp papers, had the same ad on the front page.

Kids/parents, maybe?

There must be some research out there which links these sorts of promotions with circulation increases, otherwise News Corp wouldn’t do them.

Harvey Norman have serious money to splash around on front page adverts on all these newspapers and magazines.

It’s almost as if the founder/chairman of Harvey Norman is a billionaire and can afford to splash out on front page advertising!

His franchisees probably can’t.

The Mercury was the same although with newspapers struggling so much it was probably only a couple hundred bucks anyway!

It’s an unprecedented amount of spending though.

Notice from the front pages posted above that almost all of News Corp’s metro papers increased their cover price from $2 to $2.20 today. The Courier-Mail will have further price increases this weekend with the Saturday edition up from $2.50 to $3, and the Sunday Mail from $3 to $3.50.

So if Harvey Norman have had a 20% increase in profits and can afford to splash that much cash around for advertising, will they pay back jobkeeper funding they received?

Dr Leigh questioned why the companies such as Harvey Norman and Premier Investments have been able to access the scheme while boasting huge rises in revenue during 2020.

“Solomon Lew’s Premier Investments has paid a $2.5m bonus to its CEO – more than most Australians will earn in a lifetime,” Dr Leigh said.

“Gerry Harvey has said: ‘This is like the greatest boom I’ve ever seen in my lifetime.’ So why does Harvey Norman need taxpayer support?”

Nick Scali just did.

I’m surprised that Ray Hadley wasn’t asked to write a congratulatory note.

Yep, pretty much.

Not sure about everyone else, but I’d probably think “Geez, where did I go wrong in my life?” if Scott Morrison (or indeed, most of the people who gave shout-outs to Buzz in today’s Daily Telegraph) wanted to congratulate me for something! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

…or Alan Jones.

That’s what people will be saying about me when I turn 45 in less than 10 years time. :stuck_out_tongue: Sadly, I wasn’t able to make money off of it, unlike that pompous twit Buzz.
