Michael Rowland is on leave for the next few days with Iskhandar Razak filling in.

filling in for the hosts of this show is a full-time job in itself. Seems a week doesn’t go by without somebody being away.

Who cares? Journalists get 4-5 weeks of annual leave. They’re entitled to use them.

News Breakfast hosts also generally work through the summer. Would you prefer they take holidays then when half of the country is regularly on fire?

No one is saying they don’t deserve days off, but what has been going on at News Breakfast for quite some time is very sporadic. I am sure the ABC can be progressive and have a 4 day and 3 day team to create some stability if their main presenters feel as though they can’t commit fully anymore.

nobody is saying they shouldn’t take their breaks, just that it seem you can never get the whole team together for more than a few days, it’s just a little odd.

Yeah, it’s been a bit better in the last month though.

It’s just breaking up their annual leave so they don’t take it all at once. There’s merit to the principle.

TVNZ 1’s Breakfast has this as well. I think the very gruelling hours probably wear down presenters. 4 day a week presenting rosters would be a good idea.

Let’s not forget that with the ABC being so current affairs heavy, Michael Rowland has also filled in on other shows occasionally, eg 730, election coverage.
Flying to a state capital to interview the days before a state election etc, means likely someone else in the studio, it all adds up. So yes, there would be a few more absences than say Today / Sunrise.

That doesn’t solve the problem of excess annual leave. It’s not a question of commitment.

Who says it is excess annual leave?

Most likely these hosts are just using up their annual and long service leave they are entitled to take.

I did - actually I didn’t say they have excess leave, but spoke to how a perceived lack of commitment is more likely avoiding accrual of excess leave.

If they’re unable to take it regularly, it becomes excess. Managing leave in any large organisation is difficult, if they weren’t presenters it wouldn’t be obvious they take small parcels of leave throughout the year.

So longer absences due to acrued annual leave.

More frequent rather than longer and because it’s Michael from News Breakfast and not Toby the radio producer (completely fictitious person) it’s more conspicuous.

Who would have thought this time 10/15 years ago that the ABC would have the best overall set in breakfast television?

Agree but still a shame they don’t use it very well IMO, the ordinary graphics really let it down.

Would love to see them get done externally and make use of the set more.
