I think Tony Armstrong will replace PK.
Georgie Tunny is also deserving of a permanent presenting role in my opinion, she is well known to News Breakfast viewers having filling in roles in recent years. But considering Tony got the fill in role this year her chances are probably very low.
I want Catherine Murphy!
Georgie is a good flexible fill-in as co-host, sport and/or weather presenter across Breakfast and the 7pm Victorian bulletin.
I’d be happy with Tony Armstrong or Georgie Tunny. Both are great presenters.
Paul was pretty good at what he did but in recent times his commitment to the show have been somewhat inconsistent.
Puzzled as to how accepting other opportunities for secondment and career advanent within the same organisation is showing a lack of commitment to his usual role of presenting sports updates at sparrow’s fart.
They’re blessed to have ready to go presenters the audience are familiar with to fill the role or look beyond for a more permanent solution.
Of course I’m not trying to discredit his role at the ABC. It was more of a comment of how he’s been doing quite a lot of other stuff at the network (7.30 being the one I can remember off the top of my head) often instead of News Breakfast role.
Whilst it might not be a big problem it definitely highlights one of the characteristics of the show which is the tendency for one or more of their regulars to be away a lot of the time. But considering all the fill-ins have been quite good at what they do it’s not as big of an issue as it might be with Sunrise/Today.
Paul has reposted with a hook to watch the show tomorrow.
This must be Paul’s departure from the show.
Meanwhile from this morning.
Tony got the role because Georgie would become (and still is) unavailable. Pretty sure she’s currently spending a bit of time being based in the Melbourne newsroom
Yep, mostly sport including very conversational style footy wraps on weekends, but also doing general radio news reports.
I have always found he had little inflection when reading. Still sad that the last original is leaving. A message from Virginia:
Tony has been great (and is a shoo-in) though Georgie would be a worthy appointment.
The banter between Joe and Tonaaaaay during Mornings is the highlight of my day.
A good appointment

ABC ANNOUNCES NEW ROLES FOR PAUL KENNEDY AND TONY ARMSTRONG
Two of the ABC’s most popular faces in sport are moving into key new roles, with Paul Kennedy becoming a senior sports reporter across all ABC NEWS programs and platforms and Tony Armstrong taking over as the full-time sports presenter on News Breakfast.
Viewer favourite Paul “PK” Kennedy has been on Brekky since the program’s 2008 launch.
“I’ve loved working on live TV for 13 years,” Kennedy says. “I remember being on the couch for that first show – we had no audience and I had no idea what I was getting into. We started talking to the camera and the audience grew and I felt like we grew with it.
“The new role is really exciting. I’ll be finding and telling stories about sport for all the ABC’s platforms, including 7.30 and ABC Sport online. As usual, my storytelling will have a strong focus on Australian communities.”
Tony Armstrong, a Barranbinya man, joined the ABC a year ago after a playing career with the Adelaide Crows, Sydney Swans and Collingwood. After filling in for PK for most of this year he now takes up a permanent spot on the Brekky couch alongside Lisa Millar , Michael Rowland , Nate Byrne and Madeleine Morris .
“Firstly, a huge congratulations to PK for the amazing job he did in the role,” Armstrong says. “He’s unreal at what he does but even better as a person. He took me under his wing from the second I walked into the place.
“I’m really excited about officially starting with the News Breakfast team and pumped to continue getting to know them and our valued audience better.
“I don’t take it lightly when it comes to the new role. I understand the importance of having representation for my people on screens. I love that I’m part of that – and I love that by giving me the opportunity the ABC is part of that too.”
PK was farewelled on this morning’s News Breakfast with a cake and special tributes from some of his many fans.
Says co-host Lisa Millar : “Paul brought not only his expertise to the role as sports presenter but an incredible dedication to causes close to his heart. He’s a virtuoso interviewer, a wizard of wit and his knowledge of all things ’80s is unsurpassed. He leaves an enormous legacy.”
Michael Rowland : “With Paul it’s never just about which team won and by how many points. He brings true substance and is a fierce champion of women in sport.
“Tony has already made quite an impression on the team and our viewers. He has an MCG-sized personality and wisdom beyond his years. He’s a tremendous addition to the program.”
Tony is just so great on air! Brings some spark to Breakfast that is genuine unlike presenters on commercial rivals. Handsome af too.
But it is also amazing that 3/4 Breakfast programs across ABC and the commercials have an Indigenous presenter with Tony joining Narelda and Brooke.
That fact that more ATSI people are getting permanent role on the very white Australian television landscape is great and what a week to appoint Tony: NAIDOC Week!
Seeing Tony is now officially part of the News Breakfast team, he should be responsible for handling all bad news from here on out:
Package
Absolutely. Had that air of not wanting to be there. Very drab on air.
