Monday 17 June -
Mary Gearin co-hosting with Michael this morning.
Virginia Trioli’s replacement is going to be announced on the show tomorrow. I think/hope that its Lisa Millar.
Bev O’Connor hopefully, but then, Lisa is also great.
@mirb That is just a photo of Michael and Virginia:
I would love Beverley O’Connor to get it, she was always my favourite fill-in for Virginia, @EuroKick . But she hasn’t filled in for ages, and the new EP hasn’t seen her in action so I am going with Lisa Millar, confidently. Also, Del Irani should be back soon.
hows news breakfasting rating in melbourne??
Maybe Virginia has changed her mind.
Its possible, Im sure its happened before
They said this morning that Del Irani has resigned and is now residing in the US. Such a shame, she was one of my favourites.
Also an update on the new co-host. Virginia said, “You will be very pleased.” I think that reaffirms Lisa Millar.
Mary Gearin will be co-hosting with Virginia on Thursday and Friday this week.
When News Breakfast has a more graceful and clearer succession plan than Nine…
Congrats to Lisa- the obvious and logical choice. As her and Michael have known each other for 20 years, they have chemistry.
Del can still be seen on Escape from the City on ABC on Thursday nights.
She has not updated on her social media what her next job will be.
Virginia’s last day on News Breakfast will be Thursday 15th August as the Friday will be her birthday and she doesn’t want to spend her birthday in shreds of tears she said.
Another announcement this morning with expanded role for Michael taking on the additional role as ABC Senior Network Presenter across ABC News programs and platforms.
Michael is hosting Insiders this Sunday.
In a new era for News Breakfast , Lisa Millar is setting her alarm to join the Brekky couch from August – and co-host Michael Rowland will take on an additional role as the ABC’s Senior Network Presenter.
Millar, who returned to Australia last October after overseas postings in the US and Europe, will take over from Virginia Trioli on the program from Monday 19 August .
“I’ve been traveling quite a bit in regional Australia since I got back and people are always asking me about the Brekky team and whether everyone is as nice and friendly as they seem,” Millar says.
“The answer is a definite yes. And I can’t wait to join them.”
As well as co-presenting News Breakfast , Michael Rowland will have a new role anchoring coverage of big local and world events across ABC News programs and platforms, including the 7pm News – as he has already done this year with stories ranging from the Trump-Kim summit in Hanoi to Bob Hawke’s memorial service.
“I look forward to drawing on my experience as a foreign correspondent, and the dozens of on-location broadcasts I’ve hosted for News Breakfast over the years, to bring to ABC audiences breaking stories from around Australia and around the world,” Rowland says.
“I’m also so excited to be sharing the Breakfast couch with Lisa Millar. She’s undoubtedly one of this country’s finest journalists and brings a genuine warmth and empathy to the screen. And we’re great mates.
“It’s been a pleasure working alongside Virginia for the past nine years – we’ve been part of a formidable team. ABC Radio Melbourne will benefit enormously from her broadcasting prowess.”
After being with News Breakfast since its debut in 2008, Virginia Trioli is moving to present the Mornings shift on ABC Melbourne Radio. Her farewell program will be on Thursday 15 August .
Says Trioli: “I’m so happy for Lisa and for the fabulous News Breakfast audience that they’re going to spend mornings together. Lisa’s a brilliant journalist and communicator and this is a perfect fit.
“I’m bubble-wrapping my alarm clock and sending it over.”
