Newcastle Radio

Some people wargamed a rock formatted NEWFM several years ago and every piece of information came back with them rating no higher than 11-12%.

They don’t.

Let’s put it this way, they took the ability to call international numbers away and I know at least one of them offered to do it for some money but in true New fm style they refused to pay.

Their ā€œshowsā€ page is in shambles.

Cant they afford a photo shoot to highlight their talent?

I’d still much prefer to listen to B-Rock than the jarring sounds of The Weeknd next to Queen on NewFM.

Yeah, I’m not sure Newcastle is the Rock town it used to be, it’s not the industrial town it was back when NEW FM started, it’s still a great place but the entire area & culture has changed.

To be honest I’m not sure what it is now, SCA rates well because there’s not really any competitive alternative, but that doesn’t mean to say they’re hitting the spot with their programming for Newcastle, probably a commercial Classic Hits station would do well here, 2NUR does well, but it’s not a commercial outfit & has other different format programming on, so people have to move away from it at times, same with Coast FM Gosford, the Classic Hits format does very well, but you can’t lock your radio on & leave it there, sometimes you have to go elsewhere.

Most of my time now, due to work is spent in Sydney, so I’m not really across what the music scene in Newcastle is like now & what big chunks of the Novacastrians are wanting to listen to & the fact the way music is bought these days & is compiled as national sales not local, like back in the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s, makes it hard to make a call on what format show we go & what music should be in the playlist for a radio station these days, even the metro stations a lot of them miss the mark locally, but there’s more stations to choose from for the listeners, so one of them generally gets close for most listeners.

Personally, as I have a personal ban against listening to SCA stations, I mostly listen to Coast FM (Classic Hits times), NEW FM (though I’m not liking it as much now as I did 12 months ago, so I’ve probably gone the reverse to @RabbitEars ) when I’m around Newcastle & sometimes 2HD, occasionally 2NUR, when in Sydney it’s either Coast FM if I can still get it, 2UE or WSFM (now), sometimes Smooth, used to be a lot more smooth & no WSFM, at work we have the DAB stations on in the office for monitoring the transmissions & it could be anything, but mostly the radio stays on Fun Super Digi.

Don’t forget Lizzie, Ryan and Brandon were part of the newfm haydays

That for me was Garth & Steve, JPY or Mobbs & Fletch.

Also good picks!

Maybe this is just me but i find that Newcastle radio had gotten way too homogenised. Stations don’t really have a point of difference.

And it’s not just Newcastle either.

Not Steve St John? I don’t think he was anything good.

Steve Graham… early 1990s.

Garth, Steve, Katie and Thunder Dick on breakfast 1995-96 was my fave period.

Then Austereo came to town and slowly killed NEWFM with hit music, Martin/Molloy and Hot 30.

Garth was Garth Russell i believe who ended up going to 1233 ABC Newcastle

yes. Him and Steve Graham had a massive falling out. They’re friends again now, but it was never the same after it happened.

My phone grabbed the tunes New played this morning starting just after 9. See the screenshot below

Newfm 10/10/24

I prefer to have New on at work because there is some rock in the mix. I get bored of the same style listening to Hit (pop) or Triple M (rock)

Triple M regional is a mix too, but so bland and safe. This NEW FM snapshot is more newer and female skewing, but pretty safe as well.

I’ve got no issue with it. I love the Jets and can tolerate Lady Gaga.

Triple M were playing that Lady Gaga song with Keith Urban and they play the Jets too.
Are we grabbing the pitchforks on that too?
