Newcastle Radio

You seem to think NZ is a lot closer than it is.

702 Sydney is a high power station at 50kw, so could easily cause night skip interference over there.

Its a shame 1224 am is so close to 1233 am it would be nice to have a 2nd permanent option of abc local radio on the am band. 549 am is permanent during the day but only very faint. I am sure if 1224 was off air 1233 am could be an option to listen to in Sydney.

I was also cranky that 1224 and 1233 were so close together, because those 2WS jingles of the early-mid 80s were my favourite, and I couldn’t hear them up here in Newcastle!

Can ABC 1233 be received well in parts of Sydney where the 1224 signal (being western suburbs) is weak, like the Northern Beaches and Eastern suburbs?

Probably only really at the northern end of the Northern Beaches (Warriewood to Palm Beach) and on the M1 north of Wahroonga.

Loved seeing Triple M / Hit Newcastle surf reporter Teza McKenna on “The Voice” singing the Billy Idol classic “Rebel Yell”! Go Teza!

Amazing anyone still has a surf reporter.

The surfing scene is quite big in Newcastle, home to Surfest etc.

I have a feeling Hit/Triple M on the Gold Coast have one too?

How did you hear the jingles at the time and do you have any samples? My parents listened to 2WS but I was a bit young to remember the early 80s jingles

As has Hot Tomato since beginning in 2003.

SEA employed Andy Mac/Andrew Mackinnon for decades and he often was the best talent on the station by far.

TCBL 94.1 Gold Coast often have a water/surf report. Other community such as Radio Metro and Juice 107.3 have had spasmodically.

ABC Coast FM 91.7 began with surf reports.

All Newcastle commercials and 2NUR and 1233 ABC Newcastle should all have surf reports.

I think 2NUR have surf reports over the summer, 1233 ABC Newcastle have had surf reports year round since time began, their long time surf reporter is a professional life guard at Nobbys Beach.

Terry McKenna started at NEW FM doing surf reports when NEW FM began, then later moved to NX/KO FM after Garry Youngberry left NXFM where he started his media career doing surf reports.
Tezza doing a surf report on NEW FM back in 1990, with Greg Clark, the Breakfast jock & PD at the time.

Who is replacing Scott on NewFM’s The Novo’s. Ow that he’s gone to C91.3FM Drive?

SURELY they can rope one of the old presenters back?

Has anyone ever returned for Round 2 at NewFM?

Not that I’m aware

Who could they bring back? They couldn’t do it with money…. Maybe you could get talent from WAY back in the archives but any recent talent that was actually good that could manage to slot back in and have an impact are onto better. Matty is at Triple M, Meg is on the coast, Jackson is living in Los Angeles, Jade is in Queensland. They’re the recent good picks but I very much doubt any would take the bait. Do any of the above even interact with the station or the people within anymore? Or is the bridge burnt. I am genuinely curious.

According to the NewFM shows page, many of the recent talent simply become [insert location they moved to] Reporter.

Do these people still work for the station or have any affiliation? I’m genuinely interested and trying to gauge possibility of returns.

I’d say it’s just a, “Let’s keep your number handy” arrangement.
