Newcastle Radio

Rod Maldon was on Triple M this afternoon.
Last time I heard him on air was at Triple M Sydney about 8 or so years ago. I know he’s been around Australia in various CD roles. Good to hear him on air in Newcastle anyway. I’m taking he has a management type role in Newcastle.

I think he is now Program Manager for Newcastle.

I was bored so made two mock 2NX sweepers. The female voice of 2NX I can never remember her name. She still has the best voice still today.

They sound great. I am pretty sure the voice belongs to Zoe Bertram.

She did sweepers for 2UE in the early 80s as well. Such a sexy, sultry and yet commanding voice.

From 1991 to '99 she served as Promotions Manager, Asst Music Director and Asst PD at NEWFM and when Bill Caralis bought the station, Kim was forced to move to NXFM, joining Garth Russell and Steve Graham on breakfast.

When Garth left, the highly rated Steve & Kim breakfast show ran for another 11 years.

Her final day on air and farewell to Newcastle is this Friday.

Will her farewell be as big as her last one for NX?

I am bloody stoked to be working with Jim and being his panel op/audio producer. Can’t wait.

NEWCASTLE’S 102.9 TRIPLE M IS BRINGING JIM CALLINAN HOME IN 2021

From humble beginnings in the Hunter Valley to years on the screens across NBN, Fox Sports and Sky News, long time Novocastrian Jim Callinan is coming back to the Newcastle airwaves in 2021 to join Newcastle’s 102.9 Triple M NRL Call Team.

Current Fox Sports News and Sky News presenter, Callinan has called numerous sporting events across his many years. Callinan will take a seat alongside Triple M NRL stalwarts and Newcastle Knights legends, Michael ‘Hages’ Hagan and Marc ‘MG’ Glanville, as Newcastle’s 102.9 Triple M NRL Call Team once again call every Newcastle Knights match throughout 2021.

Having delivered NBN’s nightly sport report into homes across Newcastle and the Hunter for more than 13 years, Callinan is no stranger to the local sporting landscape or the Triple M Network, being a frequent guest on 102.9 Triple M’s breakfast show.

Callinan replaces long time caller Frank Barrett, who after seven years as lead caller, and many more as the sideline eye, joins the Newcastle Knights tribe in its media and communications team. Callinan’s experience in live television, plus his extensive list of sporting contacts throughout Newcastle and the Hunter will provide a perfect addition alongside Hages and MG.

“It’s a huge thrill to join such a great team at Triple M. It doesn’t get much better than the chance to call your hometown team alongside two of the best – it’s a long way from cheering for Hages and MG on the hill as a school boy! Can’t wait to be part of it all and help bring the action to the best fans in the game,” Callinan said.

SCA Newcastle Content Director, Jase Allen, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Jim into the call team alongside Hages and MG. Having an expert panel of Novocastrians who can deliver an informative and entertaining call, will continue to make it the number one destination for local rugby league in 2021.

“Jim has hosted and called live many sporting events across all codes for years during his time at Fox Sports, we’re honoured to have him as part of the Triple M Newcastle family and look forward to an uninterrupted NRL season to come.”

Catch Newcastle’s 102.9 Triple M NRL Call Team with Jim, Hages & MG for every Newcastle Knights match from Thursday, 11 March 2021.

Good get for them - we’ll miss him at the Thunder (he was the on-ground MC - bloody good job he did too).

Upper Hunter lad too - born in Scone but I think he went to Muswellbrook High IIRC. I think his dad still does a regular piece on ABC Upper Hunter?

Sad to lose Frank to the call but great to have Jim enter the role, will be in great hands.

If you ever wonder where Jim gets the gift of the gab from, listen to his dad Jim Snr do the campdrafting. He’s commentating on ground at the Royal Easter Show.

I’m hearing murmurs that 2HD will soon be getting a 2nd FM (translator), they must be going to have another crack at the Belmont North one?

Hopefully they do it properly this time, & actually get ACMA approval before turning it on.
After the last effort, it wouldn’t surprise me if ACMA make them jump through plenty of hoops, & it’ll have to be exactly to licence specifications & tested & certified that it is, first.

I haven’t seen any evidence of an antenna or anything at the Axicom site where it’s supposed to go in the LAP, so I wonder, hmm?

Yes, I can’t think where else it could go.

Interesting, I’ll keep an eye out on 90.5 in the coming months.

No point checking the DAs for LMCC as didn’t they not lodge one last time?

I’m hearing Guy Ashford is coming back to 2HD/NEWFM, not sure if it’s as GM, personally I hope so.

The place went to shit after Guy left, Steve StJohn did a reasonable job as GM, even though he wasn’t that good as NEWFM PD, but then after he left & the new (temp) GM/2HD PD who took over late last year, it really went to shit, the 2HD PD left, apparently some of the 2HD announcers were told what they could or couldn’t talk about on air, one went against that direction deliberately talking about what they weren’t allowed to for a week, then resigned, & the recent ratings also confirm how the place has fallen to the bottom (2HD, not so much NEWFM).

Guy also says that the new 2HD FM translator will be on air within weeks. I’m assuming this is the Belmont North translator?
I have seen no evidence of it anywhere around, it could be at the Axicom site where ACMA wanted it to go in the LAP, but a couple of weeks ago, there was no sign of a new antenna on the tower, when I went for a look, & I haven’t heard of or seen any evidence of it being anywhere else yet?

Everything (broadcast) at the old failed, non-approved site has gone, but the steel monopole the antennas were on is still there.

RFBurns you need to get your facts right, the 2HD PD was not sacked I left on my own accord, if I was sacked I wouldn’t be back working on air every Saturday morning, here say is such a wonderful thing. Some people are no doubt feeding you misinformation, this quite clearly needs to stop.

Hi Pete, good to see you back here & to clear things up for us.

I’m sorry I got it wrong, I can only tell what I’m told.
The Industry is full of people who have been sacked from a station or network, then go back working for them again under changed management, so that reasoning of yours doesn’t mean much, or even hint that you left on your own accord.
