New Zealand TV

Not live, I guess, is the difference.

It’s good to see +HR=E doing something sports-wise (obviously Motorsport excluded), but it does beg the question of what future is in store for Sky’s Prime channel, if they can get more leverage from sports through the other FTA’s than their own.

I wonder, why not just put it on Prime?

3 has a larger audience, but it also gives them a sniff of live sport that they could want more of

It’s a good question - I wonder if Sky has resigned itself to Prime never being able to make the required splash in NZ.

Plus they probably get some cash from sub-licensing the rights to Three.

I also wonder if there’s a larger play at there - rumours going around Spark are going all-in to get the NRL rights next time. Perhaps there’s a play from Sky trying to show how it will work with other broadcasters.

Speaking of Three, the name of Discovery and Warner Media’s merged company will be called Warner Bros Discovery. There is also an ugly wordmark to go with it.

When you also factor in the Olympics sub-licensing deal with TVNZ, there’s definitely something going on with how Sky is viewing/approaching utilizing the sports rights they have on FTA

I do wonder if Prime might be for the scrapheap at some point.

And if it’s almost tempting Discovery/Three into becoming a member in their rights bid for next time, perhaps with a guarantee of a certain percentage of live Warriors games and 1 Origin game. But I may be reading too much into it.

I can’t see the Three fb page as it seems to be geoblocked, but here’s the promo (Sky Sport watermark and all) on Instagram

I suggest sell them off maybe ViacomCBS?

I’d suggest that if ViacomCBS were interested in a terrestrial network in NZ they would’ve explored the purchase of Three when it was on the market, probably would’ve been a better investment.

True.

But it makes me think…what if ViacomCBS brought 3 and combined it with 10 to create a trans-Tasman network? One brand across both countries with some country-specific programs and shared program rights.

There could definitely be some synergies if that was the case, not sure it would be quite as close as what you’ve suggested though.

Too late for Three at least.

They’re getting a lot of synergies by using Discovery resources from their Australian base.

Warner Bros Discovery could go after Seven if the continued sale rumours come to fruition, would give them a good base for HBOMax in NZ and AU.

Interestingly enough, SKY haven’t paid for their DTV licenses from March this year (according to the RSM website). I wonder if they plan to abandon their frequencies (formerly used for the failed Igloo service)?

Season 13 of MasterChef Australia premieres on TVNZ2 next Monday (June 7) at 7.30pm. It will air on Mondays-Thursdays in week 1, and Sunday-Thursdays from week 2 onwards, like Australia.

And some of the American shows have aired on Prime will have to move over to Three, like Bull and SEAL Team if it was for them.

Sorry, but I can’t stand MKR & MasterChef. It would be fine if it only went on for a week but more than that I can’t stand
