New Zealand TV

From my understanding NZ doesn’t have any live news or breakfast shows during the day on weekends? (Similar to Australia back in the 90s) Where Australian Networks are now well equipped to deal with rolling news coverage on weekends.

Three has Newshub Nation live from 0930 On Saturdays which is Live with people onsite from 0730 (Repeated Sunday 1000 with an extended panel)
TVNZ has Q+A on Sunday from 0900 (Not sure if its live)

Totally, however for things like the Chch earthquakes and mosque shootings they have been able to mobilise quickly. I have no doubt TVNZ could have mobilised quickly if they wanted to but seems they didn’t feel worth it other than a midday special.

Yup Q+A is live.

Quite interesting that the news was only a VO on 1 News Tonight, while over on Newshub - Wilhelmina read out an obit and adlibbed before crossing to Europe Correspondent Lloyd Burr.

Newshub has really lead the coverage especially when it broke and they stayed on air until 11.30pm. You’d of thought Three was the State broadcaster with its handling of this story. I know people say its uneconomical but Breakfast and AM need to be on air 7 days a week.

No, they don’t. Weekend breakfast programmes do not rate in New Zealand and would be a waste of resource and money. As much as we would all like the idea of having these weekend morning news shows, the majority of the population wouldn’t watch them and it would be better for the networks to break into programming, as they do, when breaking or developing news is happening.

It would have been interesting to see what TVNZ’s/Three’s coverage would have been like if the ‘day after’ Prince Philip’s passing was a weekday when the resources to potentially do extended coverage would be possible thanks to Breakfast/The AM Show being on-air.

The majority of nZ population Don’t watch any show.

But surely a weekend breakfast would far out rate anything TVNz has now on sat / sun mornings?

Aussie TV used to be a dead zone on weekends - cartoons - till 3 networks launched morning shows - then weekend morning viewing doubled - there was actually a popular wide appeal format on the Air

Now the weekend editions rate as high as the weekday editons. They created the market with a popular format

Hard to believe there’s not the market for it in NZ

Go to Canada and the US and local stations have weekend morning news shows running 2 hours in markets of 2 million, much smaller than the national NZ market

The main issue is the NZ breakfast shows don’t really rate that well during the week either but it’s kind of essential to remain in that space and they soak up costs with 11:30am/midday bulletins.

NZ has never really diverted from being a radio market at breakfast. TVNZ’s Breakfast was probably in its prime around 2007-10 and the ratings moved then (Paul and Pippa) but they badly misfired in sorting their replacements and have not got back to the kind of numbers they had then.

Yep, you are spot on!

What is the average national audience?

Here’s a NZ herald graphic from last year. Numbers not overly accessible on a regular basis.

Adjusted for population they seem to rate equal Australian breakfast shows - Breakfast getting 118k in a market smaller than Melbourne or Sydney.

How many viewers does Sunrise or Today get in Melbourne and Sydney?

Surely The Project is too expensive to produce with that audience, was Campbell Live doing better comparatively (taking into account viewership changes over the years).

Yes, but you are dealing with a much much smaller advertising market that essentially blankets the country (98% of the time the same ads are shown in Auckland that are in Christchurch or Wellington).

It was - had dipped to low 200ks towards the end before it got a big bump when it was announced it was being canned.

I’m wondering what kind of contract is in place for it and how much Three is paying per year.

Popstars has begun on TVNZ 1 & 2 and the complaints are already rolling in on Facebook about why they need to have it on both channels at the same time.
I actually agree with them, wouldn’t this just drive more viewers away from TVNZ channels?

Too much money for the quality of programme it is. Absolute trash!
