New Zealand TV

Looks like Three have given up their rights to Love Island UK with Neon securing a new deal. This must put to rest any chance of a local version of this international hit. I’m surprised TVNZ Ondemand didn’t make another play for it: https://www.screenscribe.net/neon-nabs-love-island-uk/

Been a fair few radio promos for it too, thought it sounded like a strange fit for Neon.

4-part series Rhys Darby in Japan (working title) will premiere on TVNZ mid 2020, before the Tokyo Olympics.

After last year’s ratings success, Three will again fasttrack Married at First Sight for NZ viewers. Season 7 premieres on Sunday, February 9, six days after Australia. Here is this season’s cast.

TV3’s Flower Street location has been sold.

Important to note from the article

MediaWorks said then that it planned to sell its Flower St building, with a possible leaseback option “for a buyer to continue to operate television from that location”.

Just move out all together and find a location in the heart of the city with a backdrop similar to NBC Today, GMA or Sunrise AU.

Would be nice in theory, but whether it’s commercially viable just for a city esque backdrop would be another thing entirely.

I think the long term plan is to move into a leased building and have a custom built fit out, unlikely to be a city setup as the city is going to be more of a pain to get in and out of with construction and changes to Queen Street. Plus city fringe gives more locations and size whereas the city center everything there is there.

Premium article but basically

  • Herald understands as many as six parties have expressed interest in Mediaworks TV.
  • Mediaworks say “we’ve had a lot of interest”, “process still ongoing”.
  • Rumoured to be taking a “cursory glance” are Seven, CBS, NBC Universal and Nine Entertainment.
  • A banking analyst estimated the TV arm loses between 10-15m a year. The Herald’s Damien Venuto observes Mediaworks will be hoping to get a deal across the line or risk burning through the $26m from the sale of its Flower Street headquarters.

NEWS ALERT - Nothing much still happening re TVNZ/RNZ merger…

From RNZ;

  • Cabinet has agreed something’s gotta give
  • Finer details of the new entity have yet to be finalised
  • New entity will be a public broadcaster, supported by direct funding and advertisting
  • They’re gonna take their sweet time to implement it

So nothing really new here, and now we know when the election is, it’s unlikely much will change… 234 sleeps.

Isn’t it interesting that after campaigning on behalf of Mediaworks to make TVNZ non commercial (or TVNZ 1 at least), both Duncan Greive and Mark Jennings are now saying of a merged RNZ+TVNZ :
The rest of the media should be very afraid
The rest of the media could be forgiven for believing it has been told to fend for itself
What are the benefits

Faafoi must be banging his head against a brick wall right about now.
