Interesting tidbit amongst the bad news announced by NZME.

…details on the streaming channel would be released at a later time but RNZ understands the plans are for a free, ad-supported news channel called Herald NOW.

It would be live for six hours each morning followed by repeats throughout the day.

RNZ understands the channel would be supported by partnership deals with brands, sponsored content, and branded segments and integrating investigations from ex-Three News reporter Michael Morrah’s as well as Madison Reidy’s business podcast with news content and six daily weather and sport updates.

NZC and Sky ink six-year deal

New Zealand-based cricket fans will be able to watch the BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS’ home internationals across Sky’s platforms from the 2026-27 season.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and Sky have agreed terms on a six-year deal from 2026-27 to 2031-32 (inclusive) which will see the BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS home internationals return to the Kiwi broadcaster for the first time since 2020.

NZC chief executive Scott Weenink said it was important for the game in New Zealand to have certainty over its short-to-mid-term domestic broadcasting future.

“We’re delighted to form this new partnership with Sky and to be able to ensure the best possible access for Kiwi-based fans.

“We look forward to working with Sky to continue to deliver outstanding production values and cutting-edge technology for the benefit of all supporters.”

Weenink said NZC was hugely grateful for the partnerships with Spark and TVNZ, the latter of which will remain the carrier for all NZC home internationals and Dream11 Super Smash games until the end of next summer.

“We have an amazing relationship with TVNZ and we’re looking forward to continuing and developing that relationship over the balance of our agreement, and potentially after that in respect of free-to-air T20Is and the Dream11 Super Smash.”

Sky chief executive Sophie Moloney said: “Sport fans across New Zealand love their cricket, and we are delighted to be bringing BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS home internationals back to Sky and our valued customers.

“Sky and NZC are committed to delivering BLACKCAPS and WHITE FERNS home internationals to New Zealanders in ways that work for them, including a free-to-air component.

“Details of the broadcast arrangements will be announced closer to start of the 2026-27 season.”

The new agreement with Sky relates to home internationals. Free-to-access arrangements for the domestic Dream11 Super Smash competition will be released separately.

Includes subscription rights for the super smash?

My suspicion is NZC will produce it themselves and either stream it or sell it to TVNZ for use on Duke.

It’s failed to take a foothold in the market - despite best efforts and arguably the quality isn’t there.
