@JohnsonTV In the past TVNZ used to air a local documentary series under the title Location Location Location.
Unlike its British counterpart, this show focused on the stress, conflicts and frustrations of buying and selling properties. As one of New Zealand’s most popular factual programmes, it capitalised on the country’s booming housing market. Each episode explored various aspects of the market, ranging from affordable renovation projects to multi-million dollar estates.
The show gained high ratings and brought fame to real estate agent Michael Boulgaris, known as the ‘million dollar man’ for his expertise in luxury homes.
Production was handled by Ninox, which is now no longer in operation.
I know it’s not really ‘done’ to quote your own posts, but hey… looks like Mediaworks were right all along. To me it says a lot that the sanest broadcasting policy last election came from Liz Gunn (!!!) who proposed exactly this. (Christ, I feel dirty having agreed with Liz Gunn. I’ll have to spend the next 10 hours in the shower…)
I don’t really get the point of licencing a local version of a show like Location, Location, Location when there are no real copyrights on the idea of a show based around showing people wanting to buy a house around a few homes and them either picking one or not at the end they want to buy.
That’s what I don’t understand with the TVNZ+ platform, I would have thought the commercials would stream as they do on broadcast as any online viewership would be a factor in the advertising ratecard. Since this isn’t the case I don’t see any benefit to livestreaming if they aren’t monetising it.
TVNZ+ as far as reach is #3 behind Netflix and Youtube. Then it’s Disney+, Amazon Prime and ThreeNow. If digital is their big hope and TVNZ+ is playing 1 ad over 1.5 hrs then it’s no wonder WBD are pulling back … That’s pretty dire!
TVNZ really need to look at a paid sub model for TVNZ+. Some really good stuff on there but the ads (or lack of as posted above) are a tough one. I know I’d pay extra.
(continuing discussion from 1 News thread on proposed cost cutting measures at TVNZ)
TVNZ obviously thinks there are other shows that pull more viewers than a long running Kiwi soap. But if TVNZ only runs programs from Australia, US or UK at 7pm, instead of a locally produced show, I think it’s just not worth it.
How will TVNZ covers Blackcaps’ home matches in the future? One of the purposes of TVNZ Duke is to cover live sport without interrupting regular schedules on TVNZ 1 and TVNZ 2.
Online, I suppose. Or maybe they will just interrupt TV1 or 2. If they can’t afford to show anything else, it’s easy content… Honestly, I have to wonder if the government would be better off selling TVNZ at this stage.
Perhaps that RNZ/TVNZ merger should had happened after all… I daresay we’d be having far more positive conversations atm. Or failing that, how hard would it have been to have just made TV1 ad-free? Fund it with a 1% levy on all TV (and digital?) advertising. That would have been easier, cheaper and solved a whole host of problems for both TVNZ and TV3. But it’s all academic now…
Same, if TV One turned ad free before 1987 and TV2 sell off we are not in this situation right now. TV3 would have a more vibrant News and Current Affairs division in NZ. TVNZ would continue regulation so it would prevented axing of primer current affairs show like Sunday.
Only just noticed this old post - to me it says a lot that the only semi-coherent media policy last election came from Liz fucking Gunn! I know I’m repeating myself but I just can’t get my head around it. She wanted to make TV1 ad free with extra focus on news, current affairs and discussions. Now, I know she’s a cooker extraordinare, but her basic idea was sound.
