New Zealand TV

The 5-30AM business focused show could have been the answer to their 5-30PM woes.
But it is good they will be on air before Breakfast each day I guess.

I can’t get too excited about the 8PM bulletin on Gusto… just feels like another bulletin that won’t rate and be axed after 6 months (especially not even being on the main channel).

Depends on how they promote it and how they push it to advertisers. With Plus 1 channels, you’ll have the choice of watching Newshub from 6pm, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm… that could be tempting for any advertiser wanting to cover the spread.

Did anyone else see this floating around on Facebook?

*"New Zealand’s fourth primary free-to-air channel Gusto will launch in *
March 2022, taking over from the former Choice TV." - Newshub

Does this mean Gusto will displace Bravo on LCN4?

This looks quite good, better than the other preview but still think the am logo is a bit weak since it’s just two characters and a full stop - would’ve preferred to see this developed a bit more.

The colour scheme is giving me ‘The Wrong Girl’ and ‘Wake Up’ vibes - the short lived drama and total failure of a Breakfast program both on 10 respectively.

Well I’m guessing with the 8pm news bulletin that means they have the serious bulletin covered in mid evening and later they can perhaps go back to a more Nightline flavour even?

I know they’ve got a new EP running things for the late bulletin.

Looks like the background is a screenshot from the opening titles of Apple TV’s Morning Wars/The Morning Show

This just looks like a terrible mock.

What about Bravo, the +1 channels and HGTV? And will The Edge and Breeze TV remain unaffected?

I think the edge and breeze tv will go as they are Mediaworks

@Michael_Eccles Okay. So what will replace both The Edge and Breeze TV?

Doesn’t help that the promo shot is terrible. I get that they wanted Ryan and Melissa to have the ‘typical’ breakfast TV fake laughter/“look how happy our presenters are to be with each other” shot. However, it looks like it was done as a last minute idea rather than something that was planned.

As far as I know this one is not real.

Earlier today (10 November) Discovery New Zealand - the owners of Three, Bravo, Choice TV, HGTV and Newshub - announced that it will launch two new channels (Gusto and Rush), produce and commission new local programmes, and expand its news output next year. But in March, Gusto will replace Choice TV which has been on air for nearly 10 years.

In an article by RNZ, Gusto (replacing Choice TV as I said earlier) will offer local and international entertainment content including British dramas, documentaries, game shows and films. A nightly news bulletin from Newshub will screen on the new channel at 8pm each weeknight (in addition to Newshub’s 11.30am, 4.30pm, 6pm and late bulletins via Three).

Launch titles include “Changing Rooms UK”, “Big Family Farm” and “Finding Alice” - and a new local show called “Great Southern Truckers”.

On the other hand, Rush will ‘offer viewers unapologetically high-energy shows across the popular survival and adventure genres - including motoring, and off-the-grid living’ - such as “Wheeler Dealers”, “Man vs. Wild”, “Street Outlaws” and “Treehouse Masters”. The new channel will be aimed at a younger, male-skewed demographic and described as the ‘perfect partner to Bravo’.

The new channels - Gusto and Rush - will be free-to-air and sit alongside Three, Bravo and HGTV, although HGTV will not be taken off air.

With the introduction of Newshub’s new 8pm bulletin - which will focus on the big stories of the day, as well as feature interviews with newsmakers - “The AM Show” will have a fresh new look and format and a new starting time of 5.30am. At the same time, the title will be changed to just “AM”.

Melissa Chan-Green will join Ryan Bridge co-hosting the new look “AM”. From my own point of view the new format will feature a blend of news, sport, weather, entertainment and current affairs, focusing on the first news of the day. The earlier part of the format, from 5.30am, will offer a daily news fix to early risers with a focus on business issues.

Laura Tupou will take over as co-anchor for the weekend edition of Newshub’s 6pm bulletin with Tom McRae.

At the TVNZ upfronts next week I hoped that TVNZ 2 will launch a 9am news bulletin

Can’t get too excited about the indicative line-ups on the new channels, but I’m a big supporter of the news bulletin. TVNZ need up the ante on news - not producing enough bulletins currently.

I’m a wee bit surprised that Discovery hasn’t gone the whole hog and renamed Three ‘Discovery’. The main hurdle would obviously be the Discovery Channel itself on Sky - but not insurmountable, just rename that in the NZ market to D or whatever.

I know people would say there’s value in the Three brand but, there was value in the 3 News brand too and that was squashed, 5 years on and Newshub’s well entrenched (albeit without the radio presence soon that made a multi platform name so appealing).

No one watches Midday. It’s ratings are low but it’s there as a value-add and produced by Breakfast staff. No one watches 11.30am or 4:30pm on Newshub either.

Apart from Tonight, which sticks out like a sore thumb given it’s still not back, even though I initially backed the reasons why, what is the point of adding news bulletins for the sake of it.

All Newshub are doing is asking their staff to do more bulletins with about the same resources. Yeah, us TV nerds might love the extra bulletins but what value is it actually producing?

9am?? Do you mean 9pm?

Agree with you 100%. Waste of time. Only reason I can think of is so they can brag they do more news bulletins than TVNZ and, without radio, being on a different channel they can keep the Newshub multi platform brand thing going.

Not sure about renaming Three as Discovery though… Discovery sounds like a channel for the elderly with David Attenborough repeats.
Though I would have liked to have seen a change in logo… and Discovery + would be nice. Wonder what the go is there, the Warner Bros merger doesn’t seem to be stopping launch of D+ in other markets. They’re just polishing a turd with Three Now

Edit to add… the above said, it is great that Discovery are continuing to invest in News
