Earlier today (10 November) Discovery New Zealand - the owners of Three, Bravo, Choice TV, HGTV and Newshub - announced that it will launch two new channels (Gusto and Rush), produce and commission new local programmes, and expand its news output next year. But in March, Gusto will replace Choice TV which has been on air for nearly 10 years.
In an article by RNZ, Gusto (replacing Choice TV as I said earlier) will offer local and international entertainment content including British dramas, documentaries, game shows and films. A nightly news bulletin from Newshub will screen on the new channel at 8pm each weeknight (in addition to Newshub’s 11.30am, 4.30pm, 6pm and late bulletins via Three).
Launch titles include “Changing Rooms UK”, “Big Family Farm” and “Finding Alice” - and a new local show called “Great Southern Truckers”.
On the other hand, Rush will ‘offer viewers unapologetically high-energy shows across the popular survival and adventure genres - including motoring, and off-the-grid living’ - such as “Wheeler Dealers”, “Man vs. Wild”, “Street Outlaws” and “Treehouse Masters”. The new channel will be aimed at a younger, male-skewed demographic and described as the ‘perfect partner to Bravo’.
The new channels - Gusto and Rush - will be free-to-air and sit alongside Three, Bravo and HGTV, although HGTV will not be taken off air.
With the introduction of Newshub’s new 8pm bulletin - which will focus on the big stories of the day, as well as feature interviews with newsmakers - “The AM Show” will have a fresh new look and format and a new starting time of 5.30am. At the same time, the title will be changed to just “AM”.
Melissa Chan-Green will join Ryan Bridge co-hosting the new look “AM”. From my own point of view the new format will feature a blend of news, sport, weather, entertainment and current affairs, focusing on the first news of the day. The earlier part of the format, from 5.30am, will offer a daily news fix to early risers with a focus on business issues.
Laura Tupou will take over as co-anchor for the weekend edition of Newshub’s 6pm bulletin with Tom McRae.
