If neighbours is ending soon can channel 10 repeat the series from the begining and show the old Ramsay st to the younger generation
Look it’s possible, but it’s a huge investment for just a daytime offering when the repeats of their prime time programming does quite well in the afternoon.
I think Ten should pair it with Bold. “Soaps hour” leading into the News.
Give it at least a bloody chance and then run it again at 10pm. When you have so many gaps in your schedule, why wouldn’t you try your only primary drama offering a go and make it worth your investment.
In a statement supplied to Sky News, Channel 5 said: "Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond this summer.
"It has been a much-loved part of our schedule for more than a decade, and we’d like to thank the cast, Fremantle and all of the production team for their fantastic work on this iconic series.
"We’d also of course like to thank the fans for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.
“We recognise that there will be disappointment about this decision, however our current focus is on increasing our investment in original UK drama, which has strong appeal for our viewers.”
Cue channel 4?
BBC surely doesn’t have the funds?
If Fremantle wants Neighbours to continue airing on one of the main terrestrial channels, Channel 4 would probably be the only ‘viable’ option - especially considering they have a fair bit of room in their daytime schedule it could slot in. It could even be paired with Hollyoaks and air back-to-back between 6pm and 7pm before Channel 4 News.
Does anybody see a streaming service picking this up if they can’t find a home for the show on main television? I wouldn’t want to see this on any payed tv outlet such as Sky.
No streaming service is going to touch this, apart from maybe Paramount+ but that is serious long odds.
Netflix and Amazon don’t deal with long running dramas with 240+ episodes a year and they certainly don’t care about Australian content. Netflix is in serious debt as it is.
So Channel 5 want to invest in more British drama content I wonder if Channel 10 are going to do the same and say the want to invest in more Australian drama content. Yeah I won’t hold my breath either.
Even though I knew it was coming the official announcement it finishes on 5 in August is still hard to swallow.
I certainly wouldn’t hold my breath on that. They seemingly have no idea what to do with their prime time lineup most of the time.
Does Neighbours help 10 meet any of their licence requirements for content?
It used to but since Covid and the relaxation and rearrangement of quota points from the government I’m not sure. Plus 10 will just do what 7 and 9 do, air New Zealand content instead and that makes up Australian drama quota points.
Neither would I. Truthfully I don’t think CBS/10 cares all that much on linear tv. They seem to be putting all their focus and budget in streaming and paramount+.
There are ideas but they refuse to listen. The Project is like an albatross around Ten’s primetime neck and it really kills momentum but hey so long as it gets twitter likes and some coveted demo it’s all peachy.
interesting there has been no comment from 10 or Fremantle yet. you would expect some type of announcement from them either today sometime or tommorow.
From my understanding both 5 and 10 were supposed to do a joint announcement next week to announce the cancellation but The Sun got the scoop early and ran with it catching both off guard.
interesting
Yes I think it meets their Australian drama Quota points there’s not much other Australian dramas on their channels so I don’t know what they will do
I also think they are too scared to invest in drama in case it flops and ends up being a money loser for them.
If it is going to end then 10 should be looking at having at least the final episode on the main channel as a special.
I get that (and think you’re right) but everything has been underperforming, not just drama. At least with drama is has mass streaming potential.
They also can’t invest in sport because that’s a huge money loser, their reality shows are flopping left and right and must cost a packet to produce and The Project or their news isn’t setting the world alight.
Last Thursday was dreadful for 10. Neighbours is actually one of their bright spots.
Investing in Neighbours isn’t like investing in a brand new drama; built in audience and the cost can be absorbed over episodes with delayed income potential.
Such a shame 10 seem unwilling to diversify their portfolio and invest in some Australian drama.
ViacomCBS do very well with drama and make some great series like all the crime procedurals in the US and I think it would be something to differentiate themselves if they tried it here but it seems the australian management at 10 aren’t that open minded.
I guess that’s why they put 5 Bedrooms on Paramount+ rather than air it on the main channel. Plus it’s a big local tentpole for the service.
They are trying with the A-League so I guess there is that but the A-League has always come across as a 2nd rate level league here when compared to AFL, NRL and Cricket so that’s an uphill battle. Other than that they are lacking in sport content.
That is true. Though they clearly washed their hands of Neighbours in 2011 when it was banished to 11 to help boost that at launch. Ever since then they do very little if anything to promote the show and it’s got its core of 100,000 to 150,000 people who still watch nightly.
It doesn’t have to end, so far Channel 5 have just said that will cease airing the show in August.
If 10 and Fremantle really wanted they could keep Neighbours on air and have 10 foot the majority of the bill and just shop the show around to UK networks to air and not invest. They could reduce the amount of episodes produced and cull some more cast.
Though seeing as 10 is as tight as a fishes arsehole, except when it comes to Lisa Wilkinson’s salary, I doubt it would happen, more’s the pity.
