True but Neighbours seems to be dragging everyone back from that era. Not that I mind. Characters like Jane & Melanie will always be better than another drip like David.

According to The Sun in the UK, Neighbours has been axed.
ETA: They’ve now changed the headline to Neighbours is facing the axe rather than it is has been axed. Probably figuring that there could still be some hope for renewal.
Bosses at Channel 5 have spent weeks in talks with producers at Fremantle Australia to try to find a way to keep the much-loved soap on air — but failed to strike a deal.
The hit Aussie soap which started in March 1985, will come to an emotional end in August — three years short of its 40th anniversary.
Unfortunately I think the writing was on the wall in this case. I feel really sorry for the cast and crew who will lose their jobs.
With 1.2 million people tuning in… they’ll find away. Didn’t it just move time slots on Channel 5 due to the News being extended?

If Channel 5 doesn’t want it, could Neighbours return to the BBC? Or could it go to Channel 4 instead?
I highly doubt the cash strapped BBC would be making a bid. Looks more likely it could be ITV, C4 and possibly Sky.
Doesn’t this happen year in year out - that when its time for renewal, they create some buzz, and bam, the show is renewed for another year?
And Kylie Minogue left the show over 30 years ago. She has hinted many times that she’s not interested in returning to the show. If so, she would have returned for the many “anniversary episodes” the show has made where many past characters had made a once-off appearance.
Yes, the show is sadly dead in Australia. Yes, i am one of around 24 people here who still watch it regularly. With the current landscape of television on the downfall, i hope the show does make it to 2025 to make it 40 years on air. A huge achievement. The show is for England Viewers these days - not us here in Aus.

This will be huge if true. The impact this will have on the TV industry in Victoria will be huge. It’s a massive training ground for talent but also a lot of production staff.
If the show does indeed get axed, it’s going to put a huge amount of people out of work, and let’s not forget to put a big dent in Ten’s drama quotas (if they ever get reinstated)
Really hoping for the industry that it doesn’t get axed.

With the dire state of Australian drama at the moment, any dramas be it Neighbours or Home and Away or anything else would be another blow. It might not rate well on linear but it still has plenty of fans so they might need to make a few changes but they shouldn’t axe it outright.
Perhaps they could reduce it to run for half a year as a series (like Doctor Doctor, Offspring etc) instead of a year round soap.

I know this has been said so many times, but I don’t understand why over the non ratings period of past they haven’t tried it on the main channel to see what audience it pulls.
I think when they moved it to 11 it was a massive blow to the show and it hasn’t recovered despite it having improved in terms of quality of storylines, shooting style and production qualities.
I know a few staff who used to work on it would complain that it was on 11 in SD and the amount of effort that goes into the show to look good in HD was frustrating as it murky-ed the picture and made the show “look shit”
I kind of get the vibe that 10 have it there but it’s just never spoken about or referred to, aren’t proud of it, don’t really care for it. Which is a massive shame.

I think they should hold off before they make any decisions. The show is clearly trying to improve, with lots of filming on various locations. April-Rose posted a shot of her filming on Mordialloc Beach this week and the UK viewers were amazed how sunny it was. I think the UK fans will welcome seeing all the sites around Melbourne.

Agree. It should be on the main channel. Even if it was on at 4.00pm in the afternoons it would be a boost.

Not surprised at all. 5 went off Neighbours in 2020 and has CBS ever really been interested in it?
Though I would like to know how Channel 5 lost so much revenue on the show in such a short amount of time. It does well in catch up and consolidated figures for both countries and I doubt Neighbours producers have been burning through the money.
Sadly I definitely think this is happening as the four episode reduction would take the conclusion to the end of the year for us and a few months earlier for the the UK.
I know 10 briefly had repeats of Neighbours on the main channel years ago in the early afternoon but dropped them suddenly and had very erratic scheduling for them.
If 10 had wanted they easily could have at least try and save the show by experimenting on the main channel but honestly it’s a miracle Neighbours has lasted this long given it’s surrounded by a sea of repeats on a dead end channel.
So we get more cheap news, more Project despite its pitiful ratings, even more cheap tat comedy programmes like Would I Lie To You with hasbeen comedians, endless US dramas and of course cheap and nasty Reality tv.
The Australian drama industry really is decimated at the moment, all those jobs lost and the cultural heritage of Australia severely impacted but the government couldn’t give a shit.
What hurts even more is that Neighbours has been pretty great lately and I’ve enjoyed this era the most in a long time.
Just a random thought…. But if 10 got rid of it, could Nine pick it up? Would it be worth Nine investing in it for their daytime line up?

I’ll take anything written in The Sun as a bunch of “Bull”. 
I last watched Neighbours full time between 2007 and 2010, after that it went well off the wails. Since then I really only watched main plot lines that are arch’s ans aee of interest to me. Last year I watched a total of,10 episodes, and that was the drama surrounding Paul and Therese splitting up.
All these characters here are just bland for me currently.
