Neighbours

Anyone who has bought into that street at any time since 1985 will have known what they’re in for. And AFAIK half the “Ramsay Street” houses are owned by fans, anyway.

And it will be heaps less if we assume it’s not a daily soap anymore.

The owners also get heavily reimbursed.

I thought the same. They already had Jane marry Des Clarke then leave the show, only for Jane to return a while later saying they’d broken up. They can’t do that to her again, especially as it was such a good ending for the character.

has any amount ever been disclosed? I’ve read mixed reports over the years, some saying the households got well paid, others saying it was barely a pittance but with the benefit of 24/7 security monitoring of the street.

The owner of one of the houses was very unhappy and installed a large fence which had to be written into the show. Then they parked a very large RV in their driveway which also had to be written into the show.

I’ve heard the last few years it was a healthy sum. But if there are concerns, the owners can now negotiation a new deal.

It does beg the question, would it be easier to recreate and build the street on the backlot?? Similar to Wisteria Lane at Universal Studios

building large outdoor sets that take up massive amounts of space is hugely expensive and I would say far more cost and effort when compared to just dealing with a few rebel households in the street.

True. I’m sure is been evaluated and budgeted previously. They did recreate the backyards on the backlot 10 years ago.

Though this is Amazon who are the the partner… who paid hundreds of millions of dollars for just rights to the Lord Of the Rings series before even making it. They have money to burn.

I wouldn’t rule it out. Would be cheaper in the long run if it is a long term investment. I’d be interested to know how many years the deal is for.

Backyards would be far less tricky than recreating a whole street. I’m not sure that the studio lot at Nunawading would be near large enough to accommodate it.

That’s a big studio and that street set wasn’t specifically built for Despos. It has been used for many other TV series and movies before and after that series.

Given how big the Lassiters complex is, they have a lot of large facades / sets which really arent needed and could be demolished to make way

In Australia, we’re not know to have big spaces for backlots for television shows.

The space at Nunawading is quite used up at the moment (i guess). The areas are:

  • the exteriors of “Lassiters” (hotel, cafe, police station, Toadies Law Office etc)
  • the street where the garage, the “only bus stop in Erinsborough”, and the rarely used Grease Monkey’s cafe are
  • and the backyards of i think 3 of the houses.

For context

That’s true I suppose.

They filmed the Munsters there u can still see the munsters house

You would be surprised. It’s amazing what they can do with small amounts of space in LA. Most external sets are scaled down but seem larger on camera. When I visited Wisteria Lane it was quite small in real life. Also, you need to remember we would only be seeing the front portion of the dwellings.

For example, this area could easily be modified to include a streetscape.
