On tonight’s Media Watch about the media coverage of the alleged radiation of 5G, using the one at Byron Bay as an example, Paul Barry described NBN News as “NBN’s Nine local news”.
Does NBN cover up 9 News branding?
Yes, though somewhat inconsistently.
Some reports have the “9 News Exclusive” logos covered up with an NBN one, some don’t (presumably the ones that arrive at NBN late).
Similarly, some reports have the sign offs dubbed over with a pre-recorded one eg. “Mark Burrows, NBN News”, but some don’t, and almost never for reports that aren’t produced in Sydney or from an overseas bureau.
How would you do it better then?
What I would do
- Brand it verbally as “NBN Nine News” but keep the same logo to recognise the NBN branding.
- Keep the same logo on microphones used on local news reports.
- Use the Nine News theme music to be consistent with the daytime bulletins.
- Leave the in report logos and sign offs as they are provided by Nine.
- Brand the cross promo aspects as Nine eg. with the football, “Full coverage tonight on Nine from 7.30” instead of “we’ll have coverage from 7.30”.
Either that or a full rebrand to Nine News. Anything is better than the current dogs breakfast they have now .
If you know how Nine News Sydney covers Northern NSW, you can probably understand why NBN are a bit resistive when it comes to fully taking on their branding…
Here’s what I would do (please.keep in mind this is based on prime 7) have everything rebranded 9nbn and have the news as 9nbn news or have everything rebranded as 9 but instead of having 9 regional news have 9 news mid north coast but leave it the same as what it is now
Here’s what I would do - Brand everything as Nine. Imparja is near all Nine branded now by all reports, and the WIN owned Nine channels are fully Nine, so it’s only NBN News that is the anomaly in the network.
Not really a fair comparison there, in non-aggregated markets the secondary affiliations are left with network branding (i.e. Seven and Ten for WIN SA) it’s only the primary affiliation that is branded differently (WIN) if desired.
But yes, NBN (except news) and the primary Nine affiliates are essentially fully branded as Nine.
Very interesting that they are using the Nine WWOS mic flags on NBN News (which would have been from the streaming of the game).
Haven’t seen that before from a local journo.
The WWOS logo hasn’t been centred properly on the left one though.
It might be an idea for NBN to not claim so many reports as their own.
In this Nine sourced report, the map refers to an inner Newcastle suburb (Beresford) that doesn’t actually exist. You’d think NBN News would know that and not apply a cover up.
(apologies for the image quality).
Oh dear.
It’s one thing for Nine News Sydney to botch up Northern NSW geography, but how did NBN not notice that before putting the report to air?!
VIDEO - ACA started late tonight so 9 News Sydney was shown on NBN
The presenters of Nine News Sydney looked like they were aware that ACA wasn’t quite ready to come on air yet. A pity that the microphones were turned off because I would’ve loved to hear the discussions!
yep, they have separate studio TVs and also TVs showing the station’s output.

Tonight at my local shopping centre here at Charlestown in Newcastle, I saw an electronic billboard that showed various ads.
One of them was a “Nine News: See It First” ad with Peter Overton’s face and the Sydney skyline backdrop on it.
Must have been an oversight somewhere in the distribution chain.
Currently on holidays on the Gold Coast, same thing happened on the GC relay of Nine Brisbane as well
