NBN News

I’m sure local management would like to do that, but head office doesn’t…

Resulting in the current shemozzle we have with branding on air and on line.

If i was in charge of the Australian Communications and Media Authority… I would bring back local TV stations back to there roots if I could.

Change the on-air packages alot.

As they should - one of their own (Novocastrian) on a national product.

See, here’s the thing. I don’t really mind whether the Northern NSW/Gold Coast news product is under the NBN or Nine brand.

What really bothers me is the idea of having one station brand for news and another for the rest of the network/station output. Surely a bit of branding consistency across the entire station (especially in this day and age where it’s fairly important to have a consistent brand across all platforms) isn’t too much to ask for?

Yep & I’d make them Play-Out from the station master control within the licence area.

9’s brand is very strong.
NBN’s brand is very stong.

In my opinion the station should be branded 9nbn on air (just like Prime7) with more local content, including local newsbreaks during Today.

That way they don’t have to re-brand and re-voice everything to NBN. They can mix it up.

Look at all the US stations who co-brand with their networks.

They should also replace Nine News Sydney with an NBN Afternoon News (straight after 9 news now I believe)

I’d personally prefer them to pick one or the other for all aspects of the channel but if they absolutely have to dual brand, “NBN Nine” would be my preferred option - rolls off the tongue better than “Nine NBN” IMO.

I agree with this idea, but would probably like to see it implemented on the SCA Nine stations too.

I prefer the station name being before the network name, too. (Prime7, Southern Cross Ten, WIN TEN SA). I feel having them the other way around clashes with the multi-channel brands somewhat.

The reason the Nine comes first is because of the dots being first just like their multi-channels.

And that they would want the Nine brand to be the “dominant” brand in any co-joined ID.

Whilst “NBN Nine” rolls off the tongue more easily, it may confuse older Newcastle viewers who still think of it as NBN-3.

Wouldn’t they already be fainting in their lounge rooms over it being just Nine?

Tell that to Prime/GWN who put the 7 after the regional name, despite it being at the front of the multichannel names.

Haha, somehow I wouldn’t be overly surprised.

I also wonder if they’ve resisted the temptation to rebrand the news over fears that Novocastrians would be outraged about how Sydney is taking over their local bulletin? Although since it seems that Novocastrians can handle the NXFM > Hit 106.9 rebrand and even the KOFM > Triple M rebrand, Nine might as well get on with rolling out the network brand across all aspects of the Northern NSW/Gold Coast channel including the news.

Prime isn’t owned by Seven.

A “Nine News” sign off slipped through tonight (on the lead story by Damian Ryan on the bravery of citizens in stopping alleged terrorist Nert Mey in Sydney CBD last week).

The vision has been stopped by the time the sign off aired, so it was set to Paul Lobb on screen

NBN News don’t let these sign offs slip through very often, so worth a mention to me

The departure of Newcastle Knights coach was the headline item tonight, despite it being of minor importance to most markets.

A few other interesting aspects from tonight’s bulletin…

Something I haven’t seen before… in the top right below, you can see a TV that shows the play out feeds for each of Coffs, Lismore, Tamworth and Central Coast.

A total lack of branding below re the announcement of the George Pell appeal verdict that will be on tomorrow. On air it was just “we’ll have coverage from 9:25am tomorrow”, but you can bet on air it will be Nine News branded.

Finally, it’s not very often that the presenters name appears on a super for a report that they’ve filed. But it did tonight.

I’m not even sure if it should’ve been the top story in Newcastle, even if that market & station is obsessed with the Knights.

thank goodness you’re not a producer then - you would have been run out of town if you had dropped in further into the bulletin

Regarding your NBN Afternoon News idea: Logistically and technically a no-no. Keep in mind that the news team in the studio begins recording local windows outside Newcastle as early as around 3:30 or 4 in the afternoon everyday. There are other ways to reduce the bulletin’s strong Novocastrian feel and make it more inclusive to other NNSW sub-markets.
