The Only Way is Essex
My statement was that they know good TV; not that every TV show made in the UK is fantastic.
My point being that the depth of TV broadcasting in the UK allows a turd like MKR to be fully exposed - and also means programmes like Geordie Shore, Made in Chelsea, and TOWIE are rightly regarded as trash.
The Aus MKR got 100k-200k viewers per episode on UK Sky Living this year, which doesnât seem too bad for an obscure subscription channel.
Here are some comments from Brits on Digital Spy who have seen both versions (and like ours):
âItâs just CDWM with instant judging, why could they not stick with the Australian format, and l donât like the voiceover element, either.â
âI also donât get why they didnât go for the âlookâ of MKR Aus/NZ - the red logo, the black aprons, the same MKR HQ set, the theme tune etc. Its all a bit dreary in the UK version.â
âWell. Having given it a second night, itâs perfectly obvious why the MKR Aus production team âcastâ the teams taking part so they get a mix of characters, even if they do overdo it sometimes. If you donât, all you end up watching is a group of probably perfectly pleasant but apparently terminally dull people eating their supper. They canât even inject any tension into the cooking. We know that MKR Aus is manipulated. Thatâs what makes it fun. No fun to be had here. I agree, Heartache, the voiceover is as flat as the rest of the show. Put it out of its misery, 4.â
âThe whole enterprise is just so depressing! Theyâve managed to make the UK look so dreary and dull compared to Australia! Everyone seems so bored and unenthusiastic, even the food looks as if it canât be bothered - todayâs episode was just brown, brown, a bit more brown and a bit of grey to finish. Itâs quite embarrassing reallyâ
âThe reason MKR Australia works is it is glossy, over the top, heavily scripted, and as far away from reality as possible. The bitchiness is why people love it. MKR UK is a damp squib. Re-tool it to make it like the Aus/NZ versions, or axe it.â

The theme tune? Are Justice Crew that big in the UK?
Why would they have to be big in the UK for the show to use it? Itâs a catchy song which could work in any country.
The Justice Crew song is not used on international broadcasts of MKR Australia by the way. I canât recall the name of the track, but the lyrics end with âIâll make it on my ownâ, IIRC which is bizarre for a paired cooking challenge.
I would have thought that Seven would want to ensure that the MKR brand is not tarnished by poor imitations and insist on a certain level of production. Though given the nature of âcommentsâ who knows whether they reflect the real situation.

Itâs the first time I read that international broadcasts of original version of MKR has its own theme song. I know MasterChef Australia uses a generic track instead of Hot n Cold by Katy Perry, when it is shown overseas.
Iâd imagine that the use of different theme music on the international broadcasts of MKR (and MasterChef Australia) is because of music licencing issues with pop songs like the âBest Night of my Lifeâ track by Justice Crew.
On Digital Spy people complain about the theme songs for both MKR and MCA. Neither are the songs we have here. My guess is that the UK channels donât want to pay to broadcast them so they go for cheaper ones.
If they download each episode hours after they are shown in Australia, they will be able to hear the theme songs.
But thatâs illegal. You will be tracked down.
By now filming of season 8 will have reached team challenges and elimination at Kitchen HQ. This time last year the public was able to apply for a spot in some of the tastings during team challenges, but this time around there is no sign of it.
They were filming at Coles, Southland today.
A team challenge in Melbourne perhaps?
MKR was mentioned at Sevenâs 2017 upfronts at Sydneyâs Eveleigh studios last night. From TV Tonight:
Sydney guests also wandered around the MKR set.
MKR has added a dash of romance this year with love blossoming amongst rival team players - much to the delight of Manu Feildel. Thereâs a new way the first team will be eliminated next season and apparently yet another new face coming to the table.
That means someone other than Rachel Khoo had joined Colin Fassnidge at the table during instant restaurants.

Thanks for explaining what ânew faceâ means.
Promo for the 2017 season is up on Facebook. Presumably it premiered during the Melbourne Cup coverage.
