Early prediction: After being on the decline for at least two years (probably fasttracked somewhat by Seven losing the Australian Open rights but still…), 2020 very well could end up being the final year we see My Kitchen Rules on our screens.
Surely the smart thing for Seven to do would’ve been to launch MKR next Monday night? I really don’t see the decision to wait until February 2 going down well, especially when most viewers are likely to be invested in either the Australian Open mens final or the I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here Grand Final on that day/night.
After having to see and hear those awful aggro promos all summer for the upcoming warfare on MKR, I notice that Seven have changed tack with their promotion this morning.
They have been playing a nice promo to the theme of True by Spandau Ballet, where it’s supposedly all about the truly good food. Did they cop a lot of negative feedback for those awful promos?
The first point of difference of this season was that the team did not have to decorate its own instant restaurant, it’s up to the other four teams to do the job.
I was flicking between channels but from the little bits that I saw there was a lot of emphasis on the ‘rivalry’ between Manu and Colin, which was cringeworthy to say the least.
The new format wasn’t terrible. If you remember the last two seasons, the elimination cookoff involved teams cooking for teams from the other group, plus the judges. It had been brought forward to instant restaurant stage but with one team cooking for all other teams. However, each group now scored as a whole, so it meant there would not be another score of 100 or over.
And there would still be group challenges later in the season.
Got what it deserved. Even the older format would’ve got more than that. The new format feels rather childish with Manu ‘wanting to kick Colin’s butt’ and other cringeworthy moments.
They could’ve incorporated this format as part of the older formats when the show was still rating well. At least viewers would be familiar with the show and will adapt to changes much better.
Too many changes will alienate existing viewers and with a format like what I saw yesterday, will ensure that no one new will tune in.
