I noticed NBC Universal Australia TVOD have started providing select titles for free (with ads) on YouTube Movies, such as “Daylight” (1996) starring Sylvester Stallone and “Major Payne” (1995) starring Damon Wayans, to name just a couple of mainstream or bigger budget ones, which in itsself is somewhat rare.

Roadshow have been doing this for a few years now, but they’re often B-grade ones.

Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, debuted with $114m domestically (America) and $164.2m globally for Universal Pictures, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, a sequel to his 2000 best picture-winning original, launched with $55.5m in ticket sales. With a price tag of about $250m to produce it, Gladiator II has performed well overseas. It added $50.5m internationally.

I honestly thought Gladiator was a one and done. no need for a sequel. I have seen Gladiator maybe twice or 3 times and that was enough.

Australia just had its biggest weekend at the cinemas since Barbenheimer

As confirmed by Val Morgan on Monday, the power of three blockbuster films – Moana 2, Wicked and Gladiator II – has seen the Australian box office record $24 million this past weekend, marking the biggest weekend for local cinemas since Barbenheimer – Barbie and Oppenheimer – brought in $31.4 million in July 2023.

It is also now the biggest weekend of the year, pulling ahead of the Deadpool & Wolverine opening earlier this year, which delivered $23.7 million.

Moana 2 was the difference, however, after the highly-anticipated Disney sequel opened last Thursday to $1.76 million at the Australian box office, making the film the highest grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios opening day of all time.

The film also had the second biggest opening weekend of 2024 behind Deadpool & Wolverine ($12.3 million) and the third biggest opening of all time for an animated film, behind The Simpsons Movie (2007) and Shrek 2 (2004).

Moana 2 nabbed the 2nd highest international opening weekend of the year-to-date, behind only Deadpool & Wolverine.

Alien: Romulus, the latest instalment in the decades-long iconic sci fi-horror franchise, which recently became available on TVOD platforms for rent/buy after theatrically being released in cinemas mid-year, will sadly not receive a physical media release such as 4K UHD. Following Disney Australia’s announcement a year or two ago that they’ll no longer print these. Fox of course now being owned by The Walt Disney Company.

IMO a poor move by Disney. It follows a trademark collection, one of 20C Fox’s continually best selling titles (Alien / Predator), with many versions and releases over the years, including box sets.

Audiences here will no longer be able to own/collect every film nor any in the future, including the new TV streaming series spin-off.
The last physical release was 2018’s The Predator, just before Fox’s acquisition.
All films up to The Predator have also been run on FTA and Pay TV.

Voltron: Henry Cavill to star in Gold Coast-shot blockbuster movie adaptation of 1980s cartoon

Superman star Henry Cavill will lead an all-star cast in a blockbuster adaptation of a cult 1980s cartoon to begin filming on the Gold Coast at the end of this month.

More than $100 million is expected to be pumped into the city’s economy and 800 jobs created as cameras begin rolling on the live action adaptation of Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

Pre-production has already begun on the movie, from Amazon MGM Studios, which will be filmed at the Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford.

Three years after ‘shooting’.

The BBC certainly aren’t going off half-cocked.

I don’t like being at the whim of streamers and content deals, but physical media just isn’t worth the outlay for these companies anymore.
I would love to see some sort of ondemand physical media system for content that could be ordered - but it seems highly unlikely.

I know we’re speaking more broadly… But just on said franchise, I’d recently been delving into my 16 year old Total Destruction DVD box set (covered in dust), which was one of the best film collections ever assembled.

It contained every Alien and Predator movie up to that point (2008). Every one was 2 disc special editions (so 16 discs!). The first discs included both theatrical and director’s cuts. The second discs had hours of behind the scenes features, with some brilliant fascinating insights from former and current executives, producers, directors, other crew and cast (imdb trivia probably contains a lot of this now though). And all features were digitally remastered in THX and 16:9 anamorphic widescreen transfers. Later there was HD BluRay and 4K with an “Anthology” boxset containing even better restorations, including some re-dubs with cast and even more extras.

I did later buy 2010’s very worthy “Predators”.

But realised I don’t own the next instalments (prequels) “Prometheus” & “Alien Covenant” and also “The Predator”, & “Prey” and now “Alien: Romulus”. I’ll probably just purchase them digitally to keep, I don’t believe any of these bothered with 2 disc/special feature editions anyway. But if all have/get a 4K, I’d be keen to do an overseas (region free) order from Amazon or something.
