Dune won most awards (six), all of which in the technical categories, followed by CODA with three. Jane Campion won Best Director for the first time with The Power of the Dog. She was nominated for the award in 1994 with The Piano but lost to Steven Spielberg.
During the Oscars ceremony, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage after Chris said a joke about Will’s wife Jada who is bald. The conversation between Chris and Will did not air on ABC America’s telecast but was picked up by Seven here and WOWOW in Japan.
That Will Smith and Chris Rock thing was wild - watching it live was crazy and will be the moment from this year’s event that will be remembered in years to come.
Results wise the Oscars this year were very predictive. I’m very happy with the Best Picture choice.
I wonder if there is a personal feud between Will Smith and Chris Rock before this incident? It will be interesting to see if AMPAS (Oscars organisers) impose punishment on both men.
IIRC ABC America airs the ceremony on eight second delay to cut out swearing.
So much talk about the Oscars… but sadly for the wrong reasons. Will Documentary films be given a boost, or they still forgotten about, even after this “Smith -Rock fight”? You know… since Rock presented the Documentary award…
I don’t even see what Will was so fussed about? It’s not like Chris was bullying her yet Will acted like a bloody spoil sports. Good to see Chris still being good sports about it even after that slap.
Will needs to calm down and take a chill pill. Chris didn’t abuse your wife or anything. It’s not worth risking your career and fame to slap someone who was just being playful.
Even if he was being offensive, Will shouldn’t have resorted to violence to sort this out, especially on a public platform like the Academy Awards. If he was a man he would sort it out with Rock off stage.
I think Will Smith will be able to keep his best actor Oscar for King Richard, however his AMPAS membership will be suspended for a number of years, meaning he cannot vote in the next few Academy Awards nor attend the Oscars ceremony. Whether he is eligible for nomination in future years remains to be seen.
I don’t condone violence but what an absolute overreaction from the Academy - who has never retracted awards or accolades given to the likes of Roman Polanski.
