Can attest - no to SMP, unless it gets a massive upgrade. Needs a new grandstand and better public transport links.
Bass Coast Shire mayor Rochelle Halstead spoke to ABC Melbourne breakfast today about the campaign to keep the MotoGP at Phillip Island.
The only other track that has the right grading for MotoGP is The Bend. I doubt Victoria will want to lose the event
This isnt really news - licence costs are a sliding scale based on performance in the last season - have been for some time now
Australian Grand Prix Corporation boss Travis Auld has confirmed he is in deep negotiations with owner Liberty Media to retain the MotoGP at Phillip Island.
I think there is a greater risk of us losing the event completely than it moving to a new track within Australia - there is a lot of pressure to get onto both the F1 and MotoGP calendar.
Now that Liberty Media is operating MotoGP, it might be advantageous - the AGPC is a known quantity to them and they know the teams like coming to Australia.
As mentioned in another thread, NBN entered a team with Murray Finlay, Jim Sullivan and Lyndon MacLeod into the1979 Round Australia/Repco Reliability Trial and managed to finish 17th. As you will see from this doco (and others that are on YouTube), just finishing is an achievement in and of itself.
For the record, Peter Brock lead a Holden 1-2-3 finish. Coincidentally, NBN entered a Commodore as well, but locally backed by Young and Green, the Newcastle Holden dealer.

The Australian Grand Prix Corporation has for months been locked in tense negotiations with MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports to extend a contract to host the race at the famed Phillip Island circuit.
However, a government source familiar with the negotiations told The Age on Friday that Spain-based Dorna Sports had demanded the event be moved to Albert Park in inner Melbourne if the contract is to be renewed.
The Victorian source, granted anonymity because of the sensitive negotiations, said the impasse had led to the South Australian government already holding secret discussions with Dorna representatives before Christmas about possibly staging the event at a street circuit in Adelaide.
Motorcycle circuits typically require more space than Formula 1 tracks so riders who crash can slide onto large run-off areas and minimise injury.
Many of Albert Park’s barriers are close to the track, meaning motorcycle races would likely require track expansion and tree felling, which would further anger locals and cost millions of dollars.
