Last night’s World Cup game between Australia and Denmark saw almost 2.3 million metro viewers tune in to become the highest rated program of 2023 so far (metro linear viewing). The combination of the Matilda’s game preceded by The Voice gave Seven its first +50% network share since the primetime AFL Grand Final of 2021. It is the highest network share since the Australian Open final of 2022.

As a lead-in The Voice got a rare boost for its second episode, up 70k from Sunday’s premiere. Some adjustments are expected to the postgame program and The Latest. Later today we will find out the official BVOD and regional viewing.

The other networks couldn’t compete but ran with mostly normal schedules. Nine’s The Block was the best with 557,000 while Have You Been Paying Attention? with 408k managed to gain 50k on the previous week. The final of Hunted averaged 353,000 for the final, lifting to 421k for The Extraction. That was well down on the inaugural season in 2022 that had 549k and 602k.

For ABC Back Roads was up 30k while Four Corners and Media Watch missed the top 20 for the second week in a row.

Surely this will for the time being, hold the title of the highest rating show for this year?

Of course if the Matildas progress further it will only get bigger.

Wow. Massive numbers for the match. Seven would be totally over the moon.

2.2m is huge. What will Saturdays game get? Over 2.5m?

I reckon Saturdays game won’t be that much higher since more people will be watching at parties, in pubs and clubs etc.

It is incredible to see what momentum does. Matildas second game did not crack the “magic million” in linear metro numbers, but FIFA WWC fever has well and truly captured the nation. Of course higher stakes games lead to better ratings, but this is an extra 1.4 million people watching on that second game (let alone those at live sites and pubs etc.). Incredible.

Massive audience for the Matildas match and that was only for the round of 16. Will need to check the record books to see how that compares with the Socceroos at the past few World Cups.

If the Matildas progress further into the tournament, the 3 million metro audience for Nine’s coverage of the 2002 FIFA World Cup final (Brazil v Germany) will be under serious threat.

As the leadout from the match, The Voice pulled just over 100,000 viewers in Perth at 8.30pm, making it the third-ranked show of the night.

The season two finale of Hunted and HYBPA did OK against the soccer.

:open_mouth: Massive Matildas ratings.

Incredible number for the Matildas… bigger than Origin? What was the AFL GF number last year?

As noted , biggest program of the year in metro liner numbers. Have to wait for regional and BVOD.
AFL was GF 2,179,000.

WOW. Very high ratings shares for the Round of 16 match between Australia v Denmark game last night. With Matildas advancing to the quarter final on Saturday, the ratings will go much higher.

Wow, incredible numbers for the Matildas!

Update: with the addition of regional and BVOD numbers the Matildas’ game stayed as the number one show of the year (remembering the the SOO Game 1 had the massive +500k record live 9Now audience).

Seven:

The game’s average audience of 3.56 million included a national broadcast audience of 3.18 million viewers on Seven (2.29 million in the capital cities) and another 384,000 viewers on 7plus – a record for an individual event on 7plus.

Switched off basically as soon as the game finished (early riser).

What time did the coverage end last night (based on the ratings of The Latest, probably at least 11.15), and what time did the soccer move to 7mate and The Voice started in Perth?

Coverage went to approx 11:30, Perth switched immediately to The Voice.

A good observation. Similar thing happened with Ash Barty last year, the Semi Final (nor preceding Week 2 finals matches) didn’t rate anywhere remotely close to the final (although still massive for FTA broadcast these days and still coming out of COVID)… Then boom.

Amazing ratings for the Matildas!

Incredible to think that it was only a couple of weeks ago that Channel Ten believed they were not good enough to put on their main channel and other people were saying that was “good programming strategy”.

I’ve been saying all year a network should attach itself to soccer because these girls are now household names

Great win for Seven and I couldn’t be happier.

Amazing ratings for the Matildas in prime time.
