MasterChef Australia

What do we think about how they do that?

Is it really fair that contestants go straight to elimination if they’re sick or away for reasons out of their control?

Those rules have been in place since the show began in 2009.

I understand that. My question still stands about whether it’s a fair rule or not.

I think there is probably two levels to it. The first is the purpose of the elimination challenge which is to cook yourself safe from the pressure test. While I understand that things happen, if you don’t participate you haven’t cooked yourself safe, so it is only fair on everyone else that you participate in the pressure test.

The other thing I feel is to avoid people taking advantage of the system. You could easily claim to be unwell and essentially get a free pass through an elimination, which isn’t fair for anyone.

Yes it is fair. Last night was an elimination that she missed out on, so she should have to compete in the next elimination.

Also this is a very good point.

Andy Allen ays the long-running series has earned global admiration for staying true to its core values, fairness, growth, and heart, with praise coming from some of the world’s top chefs.

“When you’ve got people like Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver speaking from the heart about how epic the Australian version is, and how everyone looks to us as leaders in this crazy franchise, that means something,” Allen told Mediaweek.

Allen, whose belief in the show is infectious, said it’s the way the reality TV show has managed to skirt the drama and consistently deliver on giving contestants a fair go.

Allen, who won MasterChef in 2012, said that growth, both on and off the plate, remains the show’s real magic. “It’s an incubator of growth. Not just for cooks, but for people. And I don’t think that’ll ever change.”

This week is Legends Week, with Peter Gilmore as guest on tonight’s mystery box, then Kirsten Tibballs on Tuesday (pressure test) and Shannon Bennett on Wednesday (immunity challenge).

Sarah was absent from the filming of mystery box episode.

There was a recap at the start of Sunday’s episode, I think that’s where it will stay for the rest of this season.

Ben did great in the pressure test in tonight’s episode,it would have been awful if he had been eliminated with an immunity pin

During tonight’s immunity challenge, Jean-Christophe decided to join in the fun and made his own seafood mariniere (with mussels and pipis) in the same 20 minute period allotted to the contestants. He managed to finish the dish with just over five minutes to spare.

Hang on a second??
The set looks quite familiar

It is. The new USA season was shot in Melbourne last year, before Gordon Ramsay made his guest appearance at the start of Back to Win 2 in late December.

Which explains the huge MasterChef sign inside the kitchen, on top of the main entrance. The sign was retained for Back to Win 2.

It was the first time an entire season of MasterChef USA was shot outside its home country.

The preview clip also shows contestants cooking at Williamstown and along the Bellarine Peninsula Tourist Railway.

Wonder why they did that

Really hard hitting stuff here lol.

The contestant who made the best dish in tonight’s leftover ingredients challenge, would win a $5000 voucher from LG. Andre won dish of the day and received the voucher.

The LG InstaView knock door fridge featured prominently in the episode.

EDIT: the fridges were part of LG’s new partnership with the show, announced at the start of May.

No pressure tests this week then?

Holy LG advertising tonight.
Whatever pays the bills for 10 I guess.

There will still be a pressure test on Tuesday. The four contestants who made the best tasting dishes in tonight’s challenge (including the winner of the LG voucher) would be re-creating a dish by Curtis Stone, with no recipe. The winner would receive immunity and be safe from Sunday’s elimination.

I think you mean as an elimination. I assume that they padded this week out due to Pete leaving the other week, so flipped the Pressure test into an immunity instead.

I am quite enjoying this season particularly seeing people like Andrei from season 1 doing quite well. That Ben is the surprise one that seems to be dominating. I find him to be a bit of an oddball and extremely awkward to watch sometimes.

Yes. Love Andre this season compare to the very first season of MCAU.

In tonight’s French cooking challenge, the 20 contestants were divided into four teams of five. They had to serve a main (French classic) and a desert (French but with a twist) to 60 teachers.

The top two teams from the challenge plus Ben would be safe from Sunday’s elimination.
