MasterChef Australia: Back to Win premieres on TVNZ 2 in New Zealand on Monday, May 5 at 7.30pm.
Andy and Sofia were on The Project tonight to talk about the 2025 season.
Couple of things I noticed on tonightâs season premiere:
- The contestants have white name tags attached to their aprons.
- LG, Trafalgar Tours and Qatar Airways have joined the show as first time sponsors (Qatar replacing Cathay Pacific). Could another overseas trip be on the cards with a tour company onboard?
- The showâs Instagram account showed a clip in which frontline workers entered the kitchen towards the end of prep for the service challenge.
It clearly showed that the prep time and service was shot during the day. However, the opening segment of the episode (when the contestants met Gordon Ramsay and the judges), and the winning team announcement, were both filmed at night.
Zero surprises here
Very odd to start a service challenge and I donât like how Laura was treated to her teammates.
In a MasterChef first, the contestants who fell far behind Gordon Ramsay in tonightâs cooking challenge would be sent to the gantry.
So this season only runs from Sunday To Wednesday is that correct? Plus what a waste of time to have Gordon on I was expecting he was doing the mystery boxes.
Correct just like last year.
I thought last nightâs keep up with Gordon challenge was a one-horse race, until Ben came from nowhere to snatch victory from Callum. Both successfully re-created Gordonâs main and dessert in terms of look and taste, even though Ben put the duck stock in the pan first, before the port wine, while making the jus. But the judges liked Benâs dishes a bit more, so he claimed the seasonâs only immunity pin.
I personally think that itâs refreshing to start the season with a service challenge. Usually the first episodes are boring cook what you want for an immunity pin type challenges. These are returning contestants, so good to throw them straight into the deep end.
The former home of the TV show, MasterChef, is coming up for lease in South Sydney.
The 1424-square-metre heritage-style brick building at 9-13 Doody Street in Alexandria comes with a functioning kitchen, the setting for many dishes plated up by nervous budding chefs.
Colliersâ Jackson Wray and Jeremy Green have the exclusive listing.
At the start of tonightâs episode, Andy revealed Pete Campbell (season 13 runner up) had withdrawn from the competition due to personal reasons. 23 contestants remained.
Also, the producers had dropped the recap of the previous episode, so itâs just the MC logo and straight to tonightâs show.
UPDATE: after the episode aired, Womanâs Day reported Pete withdrew after discovering he had Hodgkinâs lymphoma. He exclusively told the mag that the diagnosis was a complete shock. He started treatment before filming for episode 3 began (late December or early January 2025).
Pete also posted on Instagram after the episode to confirm that this departure was due to being diagnosed with cancer.
Very sad news,I hope heâs ok now.
New promo aired tonight during Taskmaster. It showed the judges and remaining contestants in Qatar I think.
Sarah was unwell and missed tonightâs first elimination challenge. Therefore she would go straight into the first pressure test of the season on Tuesday, with guest chef Kirsten Tibballs.
