Urgh. Hope it’s not correct.

Justin Narayan was a character named Butter Chicken in years gone by. It’s good he moved on from that because it was excruciating.

Really, a whole hour left to go after the main cook is done before the winner will be announced, this is really pushing it tonight.

Surprised to see Laura Sharrad in the crowd for the winner announcement given she finished runner-up twice. Other past champions who attended were:
Emma Dean (season 5)
Brent Owens (season 6)
Diana Chan (season 9)
Sashi Cheliah (season 10)
Larissa Dominello nee Takchi (season 11)
and a heavily pregnant Emelia Jackson (season 12) - she gave birth in June

The Golden Crackle which Justin, Pete and Kishwar had to replicate in the double pressure test, looked like a giant size Ferrero Rocher.

There were so many more deserving winners of this season. What a shame.

Also, I don’t think the finale should be a pressure test. They should be making their own food and their own recipes.

Justin Narayan Wins MasterChef Australia 2021.

After cooking his heart out in a grand finale for the ages, Justin Narayan was awarded the title of MasterChef Australia 2021 and $250,000, beating fellow contestant Pete by a single point.

It was the final challenge in the MasterChef kitchen, and after a massive round one and two of the grand finale, Pete led the scoreboard with 53 points, closely followed by Kishwar on 51 and Justin on 50.

An epic round three pressure test was waiting for the contestants, with Peter Gilmore, the master of grand finale pressure tests on hand and a massive 80 points up for grabs.

It was revealed that the contestants would have five hours to cook two dishes simultaneously. There was savoury squid noodles, a shiitake custard and koji butter sauce dish from Peter’s restaurant Quay and a brand-new golden crackle dessert from his restaurant Bennelong.

Kishwar was first to be scored, receiving four eights (32/40) for her savoury dish. Pete received four nines (36/40) for his savoury dish, but it was Justin who landed the big numbers, perfect tens (40/40) for his incredible take on Peter Gilmore’s dish. The savoury scores put Justin in the lead on 90, followed by Pete on 89 and Kishwar on 83.

For the golden crackle dessert, Kishwar received eights from Andy, Melissa and Jock with a seven from Peter (31/40). Pete received nines from Andy, Peter and Jock, and an eight from Melissa, giving him a score of 35/40, and a total score of 124.

Justin needed 35 points to beat Pete’s final score. Jock awarded him an eight, before Andy and Peter revealed nines. Melissa was last to reveal her score, and with a triumphant nine (35/40), Justin achieved a total score of 125, claiming him the title of MasterChef Australia 2021 and $250,000.

For their incredible efforts, the judges announced that Pete would be awarded $30,000 as runner up, while Kishwar would take home $20,000.

When it was time to hand over the coveted MasterChef Australia trophy, Justin triumphantly raised it above his head to cheers and applause from the room.

Justin Narayan said: “I am just as surprised as you are right now! This has been the experience of a lifetime.

“I feel very honoured and humbled to hold this trophy, and I’m the first to admit that I didn’t get here on my own. I owe a lot to God, the crew, the judges, my fellow contestants, my friends, my family and my fiancĂ©.

I’m not going to lie, I feel pretty blessed! I am keen to keep working hard and cooking up some good times, but for now, I’m going to enjoy this moment.”

There were so many people in the room with that winner announcement, so not surprising that it leaked. It’s a shame that it did because I always like those MasterChef endings. They aren’t rushed and you see the real emotion that you don’t get when multiple endings are recorded.

Not a huge fan of the winner though. I would’ve like Pete or Kishwar to take it out. I do like the final round being a pressure test as it shows more skill than just cooking something you are already good at, however there were too many points riding on just that final round. It kind of made the other rounds pointless.

Overall an OK season but not my favourite. I think it lacked some of the usual big personalities and just didn’t live up to the level of cooking of last season. Plus a lot of contestants stuck to the cuisines they were good at too much so do we didn’t see a lot of growth.

Seeing some of the winners there last night made me wonder how good a winners season could be. Even if they only got 7-8 of them back, I reckon I’d like to season two shorter themed seasons next year. But doubt that will happen.

I agree with that. During the grand finale Justin and Kishwar both chose to cook their own cuisines in the mystery box. It’s only in the pressure test that their skills were truly tested.

Next season the judges need to encourage all contestants to diversify and not just relying on the cuisines or flavours they are so familiar with.

I enjoy this season overall but there were no standout contestant. Also, giving away three immunity pins during the first cooking challenge is a good idea and should be retained, although the rule should be tweaked so that only one contestant can use his or her pin during a cooking challenge.

According to News Corp, the official launch of the Golden Crackle (which featured in last night’s finale) has been delayed to Sydney’s COVID lockdown. When it’s eventually available, you will have to pay a $15 supplement to Bennelong’s $170 three-course a la carte menu in order to enjoy the dessert.

Last year’s Back to Win season is currently showing on TVB’s English channel Pearl in Hong Kong (it premiered on June 29). Depending on length, a 90-minute episode may be split into two to fit within the one-hour timeslot, so a typical week of five episodes could take 9-10 nights to broadcast.
It’s the first time the original version airs in the city, it had previously aired Junior MasterChef Australia season 1.

Interesting note re: reformatting of the series in Hong Kong.

It’s not the first time the show has been reformatted. When it was shown on Star World India a couple of years ago, some episode would be shown across two nights due to its length. Also, when a Masterclass followed a challenge, the Masterclass would be shown the night after the challenge.

Well Masterclasses are listed as seperate episodes and are intended to be that way. It’s just 10 air them back to back.

Interesting observation about episode splitting overseas though. I wonder how many other Aussie shows are impacted like this and/or don’t get picked up due to their inconsistent length.

Season 13 of MasterChef premieres on W channel in UK on Monday, August 2, after Plate of Origin (from Seven) finishes.
