Long distance television

decent opening tonight in Renmark. Wouldn’t let me add text to the original post

It’s been discussed here before, but we’ve talked about areas that could receive three different commercial stations in the pre-aggregation days. I was driving through West Wyalong this morning and snapped this photo of some legacy antennas set up to receive (I’m assuming):

  • CBN8 (the vertical VHF antennas with the long and short elements)
  • RVN2 (the horizontal VHF antennas with the long elements)
  • MTN9 (the horizontal VHF antenna with the birds on it with the short elements)

I’m hoping I’m correct there as I noticed the UHF DTV transmissions from Griffith/MIA seem to be vertical these days. Was MTN9 horizontal?

Had a few seconds of Canberra 7 and 9 tonight from here in Newcastle… too weak to get a stable picture or cap at the moment. Will try again later.

CH44 Adelaide the dominant signal out of all the Adelaide channels coming into Renmark this morning which is rare

Have a super pair of binoculars now and can observe the neighbours TV, they are watching fta ch7 and they are about a kilometre away, they seem to think honey and ky is a good mix, as far as I can see from their kitchen table they like fancy wine, but can’t afford blinds, they appear quite happy.

What brand/model?

I only ask since I live in a high rise and have a decent view and would look like to be able to look into the distance a bit more.

when. I arrive at Coolangatta i found a longer reception is 7HD Lismore Via Coolangatta Gold Coast Southern

Probably coming from Mt Nardi (Lismore).

Gold Coast Southern doesn’t get 7 News Coast as per “Next” on the EPG. And the Springbrook one is directional to Murwillumbah and the Tweed Coast.

Channel Ten Adelaide received in Regional South Australia (18/11/1996)

Reminds me of the picture quality of SBS in metro Adelaide in the 00’s!

This is about what I recall seeing on VHS tapes originating from the Riverland region, despite having their own transmitters by then, a lot of folks tried for Adelaide and largely got this as a result. Digital put a stop to this, for better or worse.

The Adelaide coverage area is one of the largest in Australia due to favorable terrain. I remember watching Adelaide channels from a motel in Keith in 2000. Snowy but watchable.

Going off what I’ve learnt, usable TV coverage went to a maximum of 200-250km away from Mt Lofty at best. Anything beyond that relies on tropospheric ducting to extend the range a bit more, which to the east towards Mildura and surrounds happens quite frequently, even today. This happens to the point that I don’t log their FM radio stations in DX reports due to how frequently they are heard here

Makes me think on such occasions when the tropo is strong enough, ABS-12 might be receivable in the Sunyrasia area? (especially with an antenna pointed in that direction).

And there’d be a horribly sound come with those bits with white backgrounds. I used to watch TV4 in NZ like that when the atmosphere wasn’t playing ball. Played havoc with Dr Katz (animated series, predominantly white background).

It’s amazing what we used to put up with.

One thing I remember about analog TV when the signal was less than perfect was the buzzing noise whenever text supers appeared on the screen. I’m sure there’s a technical explanation for that?
