Long distance television

It can, but not directly at least. Back when the digital restack happened, both Adelaide and Mildura ended up on the same VHF channel and polarisation assignments. During strong tropo ducts, now that the channels are the same, it causes pixelation and complete loss of picture at times, more noticeable out of town. I haven’t tried but DAB+ may be possible.

That being said, if Mildura was still using UHF (like the coexistence period) instead of VHF, a proper decode would be possible.

Likely the video signal being a bit out of whack and crossing into the audio signal.

Oh I thought VHF-12 was the “spare” channel there (along with 10 since MDV went off the air, which isn’t used in Adelaide anyway).

Channel 12 still is the official Unallocated Assignment in Mildura according to ACMA Planning docs.

Budgewoi Holiday Park has analogue TV Channels during 2009. The channel names that received very well I think are:

PR 1 - SBS ONE (Newcastle)

PR 2 - ABC1 (Newcastle)

PR 3 - NBN Digital Newcastle

PR 4 - SC10 Newcastle

PR 5 - Prime Newcastle

Also Analogue Channels that are snowy are:

PR 6 - TVS Sydney

PR 7 - 7 Digital Sydney

PR 9 - Channel 9 Sydney

PR 10 - TEN Digital

Don’t you mean TEN Analogue?

Yeah 10 and 12 are both spare. One day if I’m bored I might try for DTV on 12, in the past I never had much luck unfortunately. (Plus its the ABC… kind of boring seeing I get it here on 11. If it were TEN I’d be more inclined to have a go)

Drove back to Perth from Kalgoorlie today.

First sighting of Perth TV antennas was at Cunderdin, 160 kms east of Perth. So unlike Adelaide, there were no free standing towers from over 200 kms away. Possibly due to a combination of terrain and Perth only having 2 commercial TV stations prior to 1988, when Adelaide had three. And I think Perth TV signals were nulled to the east somewhat?

Hitting a big red in a MG would be my concern, for once just ignore the antennas :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Perth’s antenna arrays are at 500m height above sea level, while Adelaide’s are at 850m. Both are omnidirectional, but big difference in antenna height.

What’s the terrain east of Bickley like too? I always got the impression that the TXs were on the Perth side of the hills, so maybe don’t get out as well east compared to Adelaide.

There’s still high gain VHF antennas down south in Busselton and beyond which is 200km+ from Bickley, but of course has the benefit of the clear water path.

Yes it’s quite hilly out to just east of Northam but flattens out pretty quickly after that.

The Matchmaster Antenna website can help:

Antenna Selection Guide

It has 51db UV as the predicted field strength at Cunderdin (probably an optimistic value tbh).
