You mean “home of the killer beef Wellington”?

Yeah, I can’t figure out why I never made it in marketing either…

Upon checking the recording again, it must’ve been recorded in early 2001, because the Prime watermark was updated on 11 February 2001. (austvhistory, 2007)

Getting occasional decoding of Rockhampton this morning.

Does Canberra receive tropo often? I know from experience listening to the radio that far-away stations come in at night, but for TV, not much TV stations get in via DX in Canberra.

Parts of Canberra could get RVN-2 pretty much full-time. Sydney, Orange, Wollongong and Griffith would drift in on tropo DX. A lot depended on local topography.

Not “long distance” but saw this hotel in Chatswood in Sydney looks like it gets its TV from Bouddi (37 km away), despite being less than 1 km from the local main Artarmon TX. The plethora of high rises must be enough to prevent Artarmon/Gore Hill reception.

Though MySwitch does not list Bouddi as an option for that address (455 Victoria Ave).

Maybe it could be a leftover from the analogue days?

Does it actually face towards Bouddi or could it be towards North Head? There’s plenty of places around Artarmon, Willoughby, Chatswood that use North Head or even Kings Cross, because they’re too close to Artarmon & the signals from there go over the top, the TXA Artarmon neighbours use North Head. We monitor off air both North Head & Kings Cross from antennas on the roof of the building, well tower leg just above roof height.

Bouddi is receivable at Artarmon, but it’s in an SFN with Razorback & we monitor Razorback off air with an antenna midway up the tower, in the analogue days Bouddi was monitored off air but we don’t bother with Bouddi now, as it would make it hard to know what site was being received or might be having issues, as both antennas would be almost 180 degrees to each other & you’d have both sites coming into the front & back of both antennas.

It looks like it’s pointing north east to me, picture was taken facing roughly north.

And the fact it’s an longer antenna and on a high mast seems to support that. MySwitch suggests “strong” coverage from North Head, so shouldn’t need a tall mast or longer antenna for that?

I’ve just looked at Google maps, North Head would probably be blocked by the Westfield shopping centre, & if you go North’ish up Archer St past Chatswood Chase shopping centre, you go up a hill, so the pub would need a high gain antenna on a tall mast to get Bouddi over the hill. The hill doesn’t seem big but it’s at least as high as the hill the pacific highway sits on, I drive over it every day between work & home, the pub is essentially in the valley at the bottom of both hills, one North/North East & one West/South West of it.

Ah yes, you’re probably right about Westfield blocking North Head.

I have always been meaning to ask, are you getting Adelaide TV off a vertically polarized UHF aerial (short fins facing up and down)? If you are, I’d imagine trying a VHF one flipped over to horizontal might pull them in much earlier than the standard local ones, though ones that used to get ABRS3 or RTS5A will work. Depending on the tropo strength you may even get Yatpool / Mildura instead more often.

just one like this in the pic. Mildura is much rarer but sometimes comes in off the back of the antenna
