Long distance television

If the listing says that it can get DVB-T channels, it should work here. If it says ATSC, that’s the system they use in the US and it will not work here.

Sometimes there’s different models of these sorts of devices for different regions.

as I said before every 2nd house in Shepparton used to have a tall Band II horizontal antenna to receive AMV-4. My house didn’t (but we did get BCV-8 which is for half the time identical programming with GMV-6/BTV-6 anyway). My folks didn’t like the idea of getting Channel 4, they were (and still are) avid ABC viewers.

Those in Shepparton who still have their old Channel 4 (Band II) antennas can hook it up to a hi-fi system and are able to listen to Edge 102.1 from Wangaratta as an alternative to the local SCA Hit/Triple M duopoly.

And as an added bonus, coming soon, 3NE FM 92.1!

I’ve seen some that say DVB-T2. Does this mean that if they use DVB-T2, will they be backwards compatible with DVB-T channels?

Also, can someone please find the exact 5-inch portable TV with DVB-T (or DVB-T2) support? If so, can they please either post a link here or PM me. Cheers.

Yes

I copied/pasted your title and found an AliExpress listing that specifies DVB-T and a UK eBay listing which says it works in the UK. If it works in the UK, it will work here. Both were the top results.

Thanks. When I get a chance, I think I might get the one from AliExpress as that one says DVB-T.

If I buy the one off eBay, I’m worried I might be paying for a dud, i.e, paying for a device that probably won’t pick up Australian channels, as the eBay listing I looked at mentions nothing about Australia in the description of the listing, even though it mentions being able to receive UK channels.

I’d actually be more inclined to trust the eBay one given that the UK and here use the same DVB-T standards. Even if the Ali one says DVB-T specifically I wouldn’t be inclined to trust their descriptions 100%.

With Ali, just be sure to use a payment platform such as Paypal or a credit/debit card where you can initiate a chargeback (refund request) if it turns up and doesn’t actually work with DVB-T (or if, like my one purchase from there, it doesn’t turn up at all).

OK so which one should I trust? AliExpress or eBay? I don’t know because I haven’t bought one of these before and I need to know which listing (from which of these websites) I can trust. Cheers.

The answer above already says eBay.

I’ve never had trouble with them.

In all honesty, as long as it supports our digital standard (DVB-T, NOT T2), it should work fine with standard FTA signals, since we align pretty close with Europe on the frequency bands used. Unlike the US we don’t use anything below VHF 6 (177mhz) with digital.

Has anyone bought a LEADSTAR 5-inch Portable TV in Australia and checked if the Australian channels work on the TV?

Also asking about MPEG-4 channels. Seven and WIN in many regional areas have upgraded most of their channels to MPEG-4 HD. Not only that, some metro channels are in MPEG-4 HD too, including 7Bravo. Does anyone know if this portable TV will work with the MPEG-4 channels? If not, it might be only good for mostly city stations.

One more thing, apparently this TV has a recording function, I’ve seen many that said it records TV to a USB flash drive. If I wanted to take it with me to record Regional Victorian TV when visiting let’s say Ballarat, I may not want to have a big USB stick poking out on the side of a TV, especially if I’m out in public. I’d prefer to have a TF card recording TV. Does anyone know if this TV can also record TV to a TF card? Because I’d prefer to record TV to a TF card on portable 5-inch sets like the LEADSTAR, just like being able to record FM radio to a TF card.

If anyone knows, please let me know. Cheers.

Neither does the US. They got rid of the band 1 channels when they switched to digital.

Be careful as the Aussie channel widths are different from UK and NZ. Might affect its ability to lock onto AU channels.

Also the UK does not have any VHF TV. So make sure it covers VHF and UHF.

They do once again, as when they freed up space in the 600MHz band for mobile carriers, some channels chose to move to the lower UHF channels (US channels 2-6). It’s not ideal, as there would be more interference and you need bigger antennas but some stations have chosen to do this.

Right near the 10:30pm mark tonight in Renmark. Hepburn charts looking alright

Well done! Is that a first? I know you get Rocky sometimes, I don’t recall Mackay being reported before.

Next stop, Townsville! But then they use the same channels as Rocky, and all on the same frequencies too eg TEN is UHF 36 there as well.

First time receiving Mackay on digital / UHF. Had received MVQ 6 back in the day.

I thought the opening was notable enough to keep a record.
