Long distance television

Yep. That thought had entered my mind too, but where I was standing, my house (and Knights Hill) is behind me, so it should be blocking the signal coming from the south. I guess we can’t really know for sure though, as the signal is too weak to lock.

This spot might be your best bet for getting Newcastle over Knights Hill in strong northerly Tropo. Up on the mast the interfering Knights Hill signal maybe too strong possibly even in extreme ducting.

BTW did you try Sydney SW?

With where my balcony is, my house blocks the direction of Sydney SW.

It will be interesting to compare how the phased Array compares to the 91 element UHF antenna.
I understand it doesn’t have as much gain and a lower front to back ratio to the yagi?

Yes, my understanding is that Yagis are better for long distance/deep fringe environments, but phased arrays are better at dealing with multipathing and handling SFNs.

Having said that, I once got a very weak WIN-29 Taralga (230 km away @ 250 watts) with my phased array, so they can still pick up far away signals.

I favour the phased array because they tend to be easier to mount and lighter.

I found this on eBay. I was thinking about getting one of these tuners for my PC to try for Ballarat when I’m up at Ceres next.

I checked the coverage for a section of the area (image attached) on mySwitch and it says it’s under Good Coverage for Melbourne, but Variable Coverage (as expected) for Ballarat. The coverage for Ballarat (where I’ve got it set) isn’t poor, but rather Moderate at best, which is certainly better than being in a Poor Coverage area.

Does anyone know if this item (in the Moderate Coverage area) will be able to scan for Ballarat channels on my Win11 PC with this tuner, or will it favour the Melbourne channels more?

Oh and will this DVB-T tuner work with VLC? Because I intend on using that for receiving the channels on the tuner through my PC. Or does anyone know of alternative software that can do the job, and a recording feature? If anyone knows anything about this whatsoever, please let me know. Thanks.

You would need an external TV antenna to have a chance at getting Ballarat from Ceres.

As mentioned you will need an external antenna, probably at or above roof height.

The images on the website appear to be very old (Windows XP Vista.) The compatibility with Windows 11 may not be correct; some ttuners do not have drivers for 11. Should work with VLC that has a recording function.

If I was to scan for channels with this device combo, when I want to open it next does the tuner rescan for channels every time I open it up on VLC, or does it keep the channels I’ve already picked up?

So say if I did get the Ballarat channels on it with the antenna provided in let’s say Winchelsea and I wanted to try receiving the channels with it from Ceres, would it try to rescan for the stronger (Melbourne) channels or would it keep the channels I already picked up?

Thanks very much. :sunglasses:

Little activity tonight in Renmark

Peaked fairly strong

The rest except for 44

And speaking of CH44…

As seen on tonight’s episode of RBT, this house in Shepparton has a lot of antennas on the roof.

Looks like local (x 3?), Melbourne, Bendigo, not sure if anything else. But none of the antennas are particularly high up.

Probably a TV enthusiast who’s probably wanting to watch the Melbourne channels for their programming and then flocking over to Shepparton and Bendigo for all the local ads and news updates they could possibly want!

I hope someone in that household sets up a DVB-T recording webserver of some kind, though I don’t think that’ll happen yet (or at all) lol…

Pretty standard install in Shepparton before aggregation. Top aerial is for BCV-8 Bendigo, then AMV-4 Albury/Wodonga, local UHF and GMV-6. Also appears to be a 2.4 GHz Austar pay tv antenna in the mix.

Originally the local antenna would’ve been a Channel 3 and 6 vertically polarised colinear antenna.

Never mind the antennas, now is that driver still alive with that BAC reading?? :joy::joy:

It is Shepparton. Never a dull moment…

Touché

I’ve only been through there a couple of times.

One was when I saw a bloke arguing on his mobile phone. At the end of the phone call, he hurls his phone onto the main street and it smashes into 1,000 pieces.

Just saw this nifty unit. Apparently from reviews online this portable TV works very well with clear visuals and sound, and (I was surprised when I found out about this from a review video on it on YT) FM radio, but I’m unable to find any exact info on if this TV can pick up Australian channels. All the listings for these TVs are from different (varying Chinese) sellers, so the description in one listing may not end up being true.

So can anyone here please confirm if this will be able to receive Australian TV channels? I was looking to use this to try and get Regional Victorian channels on it. Cheers.
