KIIS Network

I see KIIS almost as a refugee camp for disposed-of talent at this point. Keep hammering those nails into that coffin, ARN..

“Disposed of talent”?

I don’t think KIIS can afford anymore talent without culling 50 more off-air staff. That’s probably how they’ll afford Smallzy.

KIIS FM’s Kyle & Jackie O show hit by mass staff exodus

While KIIS torchbearers Kyle Sandilands and Jackie “O” Henderson continue to enjoy the lavish rewards of their $100-million 10-year radio contracts, behind the scenes the turnover of staff on the breakfast show is contributing to the pressure cooker environment.

The staff turnover sees a younger and greener team driving Sandilands and Henderson’s much-vaunted and ambitious dreams to expand their audience by networking their program nationally.

In the past year, the Kyle & Jackie O radio show, has shed up to a dozen key staff associated with the breakfast show radio insiders have told news.com.au.

Although the Kyle & Jackie O program is renowned for having a steady turnover of staff, (former Kyle & Jackie O EP Pedro) Vitola would pin the failure of the show’s Melbourne launch on KIIS management which, he claimed, had failed to hire enough “experienced, innovative program producers to match the workload”.

The latest one who resigned was Ella or nickname “Lingus”. She is moving to the Morning Show next year.

Here’s what strikes me as being quite odd about this article: it’s making the claim that the K&J Show has lost up to a dozen “production staff,” yet it goes on to list several people and departments who aren’t production staff, i.e.: CEO, Chief Content Officer, KIIS1065 Content Director, KIIS network promotions staff and ARN’s Finance, Sales Support and Tech Force teams.

To bolster its claims that this “mass exodus” occured in the past year, the article features a photo of Kyle, Jackie and their team, with big red crosses put over the faces of those who are part of this “mass staff exodus” in the past year. See below.

There are two issues here.

1. The image isn’t from the past 12 months, it’s from the 6th of June 2023.

2. News.com.au’s version of the image crops out the show’s newsreader Brooklyn Ross. This was done, presumedly, because Brooklyn’s still on the show, and thus it’s inconvenient to the article’s narrative that a big red X can’t be stamped on his face. Rather than showing the original image, news.com.au made the call to crop Brooklyn out of it and make its readers believe that this part of the image doesn’t exist.

The article then makes a number of claims that a simple Google search debunks:

That the “program’s audio producer Thomas Martin” departed in 2024. LinkedIn indicates that his replacement started in 2023.

That in July 2024, “KIIS promotions co-ordinator Mel Maltby left.” LinkedIn and her own WordPress site indicate that Mel was, in fact, the promotions co-ordinator for The Night Show and ‘The Pick Up,’ not the K&J Show.

Splitting hairs here, but yet another example of the article making claims that aren’t correct. The article is referring to the past 12-months, yet goes on to state that Pedro Vitola left the EP’s role in August of 2024.

I’ve been told that the K&J Show has around 20 to 25 production staff ranging from audio, digital and imaging to tech, PR and news. I can only see 4 production staff from the K&J Show who have actually left in the past year, not quite the “up to a dozen” mark the article claims. The average annual turnover in the Australian media industry is at around the 20% mark, so for the K&J team the average would be 4-5 staff, AKA the actual number of production staff who have left the show in the past 12 months.

There’s plenty of things you can rightly smash the K&J Show for, so I can’t quite understand why news.com.au would fabricate this story about the show being hit by a recent “mass staff exodus.”

Sloppy journalism.

Whaaaa? That’s a lot of people for a crappy radio show. It’s not just K&J themselves that are costing ARN $$$ in salaries.

Not so subtle hint this was then.

Will it just be a music shift? Or more interactive with guest interviews, etc?

And what does this mean for Gordie? Will he be 12-3pm?

Seems like Smallzy was picked up to be groomed for Breakfast when Kyle quits or dies.

And pigs will fly before Kyle calls it quits

ARN says not happening.

Probably because this has to materialize, which isn’t a good look.

But ARN has confirmed he has not been recruited for the key daytime slot on KIIS.

Interesting that it’s not a flat out denial from ARN that Smallzy’s joining KIIS, rather it’s a denial about the specific time slot. It’s a guarantee he’ll be at KIIS next year, you can bet the house on it.
