The only thing routine about The Kyle & Jackie O Show is the timeslot – every morning it is unexpected and goes against the grain of formulaic radio. It’s a little bit rogue, in the best possible way.
That’s very Howard Stern. The only thing predictable was his start time (you never even knew when his show would end). Complete opposite of formulaic radio - 7.15 gotcha call, 7.35 battle of the sexes, 7.50 mystery sound.
There are some who argue the NEED for formula in the morning because listeners want that familiarity. If I haven’t hit High Street and beat the bomb has already started then I know I’m running late to drop off the kids.
K&J aren’t chasing that audience.
I love the current campaign - Focus group: Radio gone rogue, because it is so self-deprecating. Australians struggle with self-deprecating humor. Most don’t even understand it. Most Australian humor is about taking the piss out of others, or laying shit on others.
Melbourne is the comedy capital of Australia. And there are people in Melbourne who have an appreciation for the alternate style of humor (which is why Christian is doing so well). People who grew up on British comedy.
In the same way that Kath & Kim poked fun at people who shopped at Fountain Gate, Kyle can also take the piss out of all Melbournians.
I’ll enjoy the comedy when there actually is some.
Howard Stern was a very long time ago and that type of radio has had its day.
Also if you can’t tell the difference between Kath and Kim style of poking fun and what K&J are doing then you’re missing it. It’s all about intent. Poking fun is one thing, but crass and nasty is another.
And the whole of Australia grew up on British comedy, not just Melbourne. What K&J do has nothing to do with that style of comedy either.
having pissing competitions on-air is not quite the same as taking the piss. I am not sure K&JO is doing any of the latter but they’ve certainly been doing the former
Christian does well because his radio is audience-driven - it’s not particularly showy or focused on who they can get to do an interview and it stands out as a format.
Interesting strategy to win over listeners - in a market that let’s be honest, is fairly skeptical of people from Sydney at the best of times.
No big deal, just a little thing… heard Gordie this morning refer to Toowong as Toowong and not Toowong, but who’s to say he’s wrong anyway. With a population of only 2.8 million in greater Brisbane we’re lucky he goes to the effort of making special little voice tracks for us.
And just because the locals pronounce a place name a certain way doesn’t necessarily make it ‘right’ I guess.
I was listening to RIM FM the other day and the announcer said ‘Goondiwindi’ instead of Gunda. And at first I thought ‘what an idiot’, but maybe that’s the proper pronunciation these days.
I come from a town called Timaru, just up the road from Oamaru and the way us locals pronounce these places is certainly different to that of the national broadcaster. Two wrongs.
So Gordie, say Toowong however you want to mate. And the same goes for Indooroopilly and Capalaba as well! You can never be too wrong.
I’m not suggest they don’t know what they’re doing, but the Melbourne campaign in the space of a few months has gone from “we’re behaving” to “gone rogue”
Is it mixed messages or just throwing feces at at the wall and seeing what sticks at the moment
I saw on Instagram that Kip and Corey Oates from KIIS 97.3 breakfast were out at RSPCA Wacol one day last week as part of National volunteers week. They were cleaning out dog s**t ,playing with dogs and cuddling cats .It wasn’t one of my days there so I didn’t see them.
So that means no local CD for KIIS1065 nor KIIS101.1? So it’s essentially all going straight to DB now?
I mean, it kind of makes sense given all the networking between Sydney & Melbourne. They did it for Gold101.7 & Gold104.3… so KIIS is just playing catch up.
