Maybe this is ARN’s end goal… Bring the company down, and write off everything and start again

we know he was at Ten, which was the second one? Seven?

Yes. He was passed over, went to 10 then back to 7 and get thrown out after ratings tumbled. He went to Rugby and V8s too I think?

Either way perfect example of the boys club

He was sacked from Rugby Union after he tried to reform NSW Rugby Union. Then Queensland, ACT, West Australian, Tasmanian, South Australian and Northern Territory Rugby Unions jointly sent letters of no confidence to the RA chairman and the RA board saying they’d lost faith in McLennan’s leadership.

He resigned just hours after declaring he would not resign in response to a letter.

And he got Eddie Jones in as coach a year out from a Rugby World Cup which saw them fail to advance out of pool play.

Lachy posted on LinkedIn that he would finish on K&J on June 6.

I’m very happy for him. The way Kyle treats the poor guy. It’s about time.

As if that commercial is gonna help them.

I’m confused. Weren’t they promoting at the beginning of the year that they’re going to be more behaved and less naughty. This new promotion does not reflect that.

They did a similar style ad (K&J listening in a focus group) in Sydney in 2018.

Well, that’s Wade’s 20 minute ramble on the podcast next Saturday…. Loves his marketing that fella.

Yeah but that was always just a ruse. ‘Management want us to behave, but Kyle’s gone off-script’. Set it up nicely with a promise to follow the ‘rules’, then break those rules.

People love rule breakers. Radio is great when it goes off-script. That was what used to make Howard Stern so great - you never knew what to expect. But what’s the point of rule-breaking, if there are no rules?

K&J aren’t going rogue in Sydney because their show is BAU. They’re going rouge in Melbourne because they promised to be good, but Kyle isn’t. How isn’t he being good? Oh I guess we will just have to tune in.

It’s actually pretty enticing. The anti-establishment, radio-rebels. ‘rogue’ type positioning works well for a breakfast show that is an ‘underdog’ in the market. The original positioning of K&J as being ‘the breakfast show of the stars’, ‘the #1 radio show in Australia’, didn’t work and understandably so.

This tactic though, could work quite well. In fact, the more Kyle bags Melbourne, the more it will feed into the ‘radio gone rogue’, ‘upstart’ and ‘unpredictable’ radio that people absolutely love. Quite honestly, if K&J were only on 101.1, and 101.1 only, I think we all know they’d already be #1 in Melbourne.

The tricky part is balancing this ‘challenger’ ranking in Melbourne with their ‘champion’ status in Sydney.

You clearly don’t understand the market,if you think Melbourne people like to be bashed by someone in Sydney, you’re nuts.

dude, have you been to Melbourne? the notion that a rich guy bagging them from Sydney would be popular is just insane.

Yeah, Melbourne FM is so ‘special’ that a Pom is number 1 in the market.

It’s all too precious and sooky to think that radio has to be conformist and all very ‘I  Melbourne’ in a 3KZ kind of way. Sure you’re not going to win over every Melburnian by bagging them. But all you need is 15%.

Scott Shannon went from LA to NY and took WPLJ from last to first in 12 months. He spent the whole time complaining how miserable NY was compared to LA. Plenty of his listeners agreed. They could relate.

you conveniently ignored the part where he said

I have never listened to Mr O’Connell but he certainly doesn’t have a reputation for insulting his audience. And he lives and is engaged with his new home. Nothing about him being “a Pom”.

K&JO could never complain about Melbourne because they are never here. That’s the point. If they were in Melbourne and actually had lived experience, people might not be so anti.

Christian knew Melbourne wanted localism. that’s why he went out of his way to learn about Melbourne. he did his “AFL speed dating” to decide what team to follow. He took what would have been a negative - being a foreigner in a new city, and leaned into it and made some great radio. He wasn’t in another city bagging them.

Also he fits the station that was already a success, nobody wants onlyfans radio with bimbos and himbos and the Sydney style Daily Mail radio.

101.1 has been a basket case for years and years and they aren’t helping.
