Maybe rename KIIS as Mix 101.1 playing 21st century music and convert some of their DAB stations to TT (for 80’s & 90s) and create another DAB station and called it 3DB playing extended versions of 70s dance music. That would honour their legacy and there is something for everyone.
Some of those stations are probably better as Gold aligned.
I don’t get this fascination from people for reviving the 3DB name. Certainly in terms of some sort of music format. For much of its last 30 or so years it was mostly a talkback, sport, racing station. i doubt anyone today under the age of 60 would even know what 3DB was. And those that do would not think immediately associate it as a music station, even though it did have a music format for a short time. But It wasn’t like the iconic music radio station brands like 2SM or 3XY.
I agree - I really don’t get the fascination on reviving any name. In the past 10 or so years, I’ve heard of the names 2UW, 2KA, 4GG being revived. What’s the point?
They were great stations in the day, but they’re finished.
They played great music during the time they were on air over many decades.
I’m all for reliving the music of the era - but think of something new - start a new legacy. Don’t just rehash a retired name - very few will care and not feel any connection to a new 2KA, 2UW or 4GG.
I loved listening to 2KA back in the day and so many names went through there that went on to bigger things, but it can never be replicated as it were, today, making the use of the name pointless.
I tend to agree. Too much time has passed for most of these names to be revived. The only scenario that might make sense is for an operator to brand a classic hits DAB station with a former station name. If for example ARN had the sense to create a DAB only classic hits stream it might be effective for them to use Classic Hits 2WS or Classic Hits 4KQ in those markets. 3KZ is too long gone. 4GG on the Gold Coast probably still has enough recognition for that. But apart from that I don’t see any others that still retain the brand recognition after all these years. Actually FM104 still does in Brisbane too. 4TO in Townsville too.
I would have to agree with you there. While I was only mentioning a couple of examples that have been revived, I think 4TO, 2GO, 2WG etc would work if revived, if SCA decided to ditch Triple M in the regional areas.
It’s no TTFM
Kyle is set to become the Elvis Duran of Australian radio.
Elvis is 60, and breakfast host on CHR Z100 (and networked stations). What is it with old men on CHR radio? Kyle is 53.
Listening to Craig Bruce’s podcast last year when Mitch Churi got the sack and you’d think they were talking about some 17 year old the way Craig and Irene were talking about the ‘young’ talent and how he was ‘up and coming’ and a promising ‘kid’ showing so much potential, and how ARN was overlooking ‘a young talent on the verge of becoming the next superstar’.
Churi is almost 30. Hang on, is that considered some fresh-faced ‘kid’ in radio these days?
Sachin Tendulkar played test cricket at 16. Sam Ruth ran a sub-4 at 15. Tim Watson played VFL at 15.
Ryan Seacrest was 30 when he replaced Rick Dees on KIIS, Rick was 54. Now Seacrest is 50 and looks set to continue on KIIS for many years to come.
With a ten year contract, will KIIS age as Kyle ages? Or will he still be playing new hits in the morning as a 60 year old like Elvis does?
honestly, i think unless he moves stations, if he is still on KIIS when he’s 60, it would still most likely be new hits.
I’m sure it would’ve crossed Kyle’s mind about switching to a more mature format.
To Ugly Phil’s credit, he has at lease safe-proofed his career by transitioning to talkback.
You forgot about the cold hard cash and icey cold cans of coke.
I found 128 Kbps MP3 streams for KIIS 973 Brisbane, KIIS 80s and KIIS 90s. They sound great on my Yamaha RX-V385 under the Dolby Pro Logic II Music program.
Am I allowed to post the URLs for the streams on here?
in the Internet Radio Apps & Devices topic.
Theres also plenty of others there including some 320k for Nova etc
I found the 320 Kbps streams for all six Nova stations last night.
Its another KJ best bits for the second time this week today.
200 jobs lost and offshoring functions to pay for Kyle and Jackie O.
ARN made one of the biggest bets in Australian media history, re-signing the hosts of The Kyle and Jackie O Show to a 10-year radio deal worth $200 million in 2023.
With Sandilands and Henderson paid $10 million a year each, the company has reaped little from its blockbuster investment, and ARN chairman Hamish McLennan told investors at the company’s annual meeting on Thursday that the company was ready to make the tough calls until its bet on The Kyle and Jackie O Show pays off.
“We’ve let over 200 people go in the last six months. That is massive for a business in our size,” he said. ARN’s decision to offshore some functions and reduce its head count even more aimed to deliver a cost cut of $40 million, or about 20 per cent of its entire cost base, McLennan said.
ARN’s shares started the session on Thursday at 34¢. They were trading at $2.10 at the start of 2022.
He almost seems, proud? It’s just sick and twisted.
This is the same Hamish who was sacked from two TV networks. One for helping it go bust, and the other one for plummeting ratings. He isn’t a great media brain.
That’s exactly how it sounds. He makes it sound like an achievement. What an a-hole.
He also did some astonishingly bad things at rugby union. How he keeps getting gigs is beyond me.
