This is one of the sad things about many industries, not just in the media alone - if you object to something that you might find offending, but management don’t agree with you on it. If you speak up, you are punished by having your career opportunities and options limited.
In saying that, there isn’t any evidence to say that Nat isn’t okay with it, however, given the ego’s at KIIS, there would be a high chance it would impact her options if she spoke up.
Not sure I completely agree - the comments will do some damage, but I don’t think it’s terminal, yet. I think realistically they’ve got until the end of the year to do something to turn things around. The break over Dec/Jan is going to make it tough for them to retain listeners.
The comments point to something a little bigger too - they reinforce the lack of real interest to try and lure Melbourne audiences in with some kind of presence (have they done anything in Melbourne since the launch bus?).
This to me is a bigger issue than any of Kyle’s verbal masturbation and shows some of the difficulty of having multi-market breakfast programming, your talent may not necessarily be physically in a particular market but you’ve got to do something to wrap around these markets.
It’s not just the Melbourne public but the local Melbourne media won’t paint them in a good light now. He’s now perceived as a Sydney wanker. I’m also not sure it’ll do any favours to their tv commitments.
It’s not necessarily “bad words” Melburnians don’t like, it’s hearing them from Kyle’s (and Jackie’s) mouth. That, in addition his personality and arrogance irks listeners.
For these reasons, I fail to see how “cleaning up” the show will have any positive impact.
If they tinker around with the show, or soften it too much, then it could start impacting their Sydney ratings. And even if they did clean it up, I doubt they can reverse any of the damage - too late at this point.
Sandilands has topped Zoo Weekly’s 50 People We Hate list, released today, followed by co-host Jackie O in the no.2 spot, while Fritzl is third.
I agree. This isn’t 25 years ago. People have too many options these days with too many podcasts and YouTube videos to catch up on. They’re not going to sit there daily “hate-listening” to these guys.
Plus if they didn’t sign a new contract, they could’ve risked them walking to another company like SCA if they had offered a decent deal.
Even renegotiating now would be a risk IMO, since Kyle has been very enthusiastic about them going to air in Melbourne, and he has mentioned Brisbane a number of times now, as well as what he calls the “20 year dream of going national”. If they take them off air in Melbourne, or cut their pay to fund a new Breakfast crew for Melbourne, they again run the risk of them packing up and moving to a rival station.
Second time this week the Melbourne subreddit has delighted in KJ’s results…of course there are the classics (ie. “who listens to radio anymore”) and the subreddit can become a bit of an echo chamber but the hatred for the duo can’t be totally ignored https://www.reddit.com/r/melbourne/s/usDhz3Ib7V
ARN were desperate to keep them and desperate times often result in some really poor decision making.
I can’t recall what their deal was and whether it was consistent or back-ended, but they need to see out a decent amount of their contract to vest the share options they’ve got.
