He currently isn’t breaking any regulations though. He may talk filth and people don’t like that but he isn’t breaking anything so ARN don’t need to have a problem with him.
It’s clearly ‘acceptable’ at ARN though - and I’m sure there’d be others where this would happen. Brit (Pom), Kiwi, American. Any kind of prefix that includes the country. Not saying it’s right - but there’s probably a likelihood it’s going to create less offence when it’s a white person involved.
There is a fine line, but really look through the list of producers etc and most of their nicknames are (imho) much more offensive (Lingus for a producer whose last name is Kanna for example). I know the legislation but if you’re going to pin them on Croat Nat, it’s like Al Capone when he was got on tax evasion.
All that shows is that ARN play far more fast and loose than most corporates in Australia. It doesn’t say much for their corporate culture or compliance, but it’s also not surprising in the FM radio industry, and media in general. And one day it could very easily bite them in a future claim or court case.
I think ARN needs to wrestle control back of the breakfast slot first - it’s clear they’re not in the driver’s seat and it should be ringing huge risk alarms at ARN HQ, there are possibly some significant issues around governance here too.
I’m sure ARN management were banging their heads on the nearest object they could find when they found out about these comments Kyle made last Thursday (which were reprinted by the Herald Sun):
“And you know, because of the lacklustre ratings and — I blame everyone in Melbourne. It is your fault, you are late to the party, you are pearl clutchers, you all love the shit show that used to be on here that we a—holed, after years of shit — a—holed them over to Nova.
“They got one month of number one and now they are starting to go back down the gurgler again, but everyone keeps (a long censoring beep) … over it. If you want to listen to shit, listen to shit, that is fine by me.
“At the end of the day he is a ranga from Brisbane, he is not even a Melbourne guy, so who is the joke on? Pests.”
Must be a slow news day for The Herald Sun if it took them until today to put that report together .
In all seriousness, Kyle and Jackie O still don’t realise that calling Melbourne listeners “pests”, and “pearl clutches” is one of the reasons why Melbourne is turning them off, or that they are tuning into the “ranga from Brisbane” is because he is broadcasting a local show, live from the market, for the market, with stuff relevant to the market, rather than a Sydney show being pumped down the line.
Kyle seems to operate on the Trumpian principle that any publicity is good publicity - especially when it’s he who provides the basis for the stories.
I get that they don’t need to win over every potential Melburnian listener to get good ratings, but this kind of stuff is really dumb when they have to build an audience from a fairly low base, people aren’t going to ‘hate listen’ to KIIS - they don’t need to.
ARN has a real issue brewing here - while they may be willing to have some ratings pain as K&JO try and build something, it’s hard to believe that they’re willing to secede control over the whole thing (as it is appearing to have happened) to appease them.
If ARN can’t wrestle control back over what’s going out to clean up the content before the end of the year, it’s a lost cause. Might be time to brush up on the talent contracts and start looking at how they can be terminated.
