Excellent storytelling by Jackie. Thanks for unearthing that @TAir, always relevant.
This is exactly why no one should be desperate enough to work for SCA.
Management then and now (as most decision makers of that era remain in one position or another) facilitate a toxic workplace culture that treats their staff poorly.
The product of radio relies all on and off air talent being valued. SCA do not. What Jackie described of the contract negotiations happens to general staff year in, year out.
In recent years, Sarah & Paddy were undermined, Bodge was frozen out and the ever successful Hamish Carter up in Toowoomba made to feel unwelcome despite almost 20 years of huge revenue on the back of his talent with a far higher net return than the large contracts K&J command.
Then all bar one team per state of regional FM breakfast teams were sacked in the middle of a pandemic during punitive lockdowns and border restrictions preventing newly redundant talent from reuniting with their families and support networks despite SCA obtaining Jobkeeper.
2013, 2022, 2023; whatever the year, SCA will continue to facilitate this culture until all management and board are removed and refreshed.
Does Adelaide really need 3 CHR/Hot AC sounding stations? That would make only 1 commercial FM being in any way significantly different from the other 3.
Exactly - welcome to Brisbane! 3 CHR/Hot AC FM stations and 1 bogan talk/sport/music FM station.
At least Brisbane has great overspill FM stations like Breeze and Rebel. But itâs ridiculous in markets like Adelaide and Brisbane with only four âofficialâ FM stations to have 3 targeting the same audience⌠Urgh. Itâs just begging a big chunk of audience to go elsewhere (e.g. streaming).
Herald Sun reporting that KIISâs 3pm Pick Up with Kate Langbroek, Monty Dimond and Yumi Stynes has been axed, and will finish up at the end of the year.
There is speculation in the radio industry that the Life Uncut podcast hosts Brittany Hockley and Laura Byrne will launch a new show in that timeslot in 2023.
Exactly. Therefore they can be a bit more flexible with who they put in the slot. So letâs put in a good show. Will and Woody have had enough time and they just arenât good.
Itâs ridiculous that Melbourne has 5 commercial music radio stations that play predominately oldies (Triple M, Gold, Smooth, 3MP and Magic) all chasing the same audience.
Hmm I donât think thatâs quite the same. I donât think the 3MP and Magic audience are the same as the FMâs. 3MP and Magic are the only âoldiesâ stations in that list. The FMâs are classic hits, rock, AC and soft AC. Quite different formats.
The situation with KIIS, Nova and Hit networks is much closer in target demo and theyâre all basically the same format - Hot AC/CHR - just in slightly varying forms. If they were each targeting the same younger audience with more distinct formats it wouldnât be so bad.
You would know if youâre listing to 3MP for example vs. Triple M.
Gold 104 plays 80s, 90s, 00s and some 2010s (Gotye, Vance Joy)
Triple M plays the same 60 rock songs from the 70s, 80s,90s and 00s and rarely play new music or anything newer than 2009.
Smooth is 80s and 90s AC.
3MP is 60s, 70s, and 80s easy listening
Magic plays 60s 70s and 80s (although I did hear Bruce Springsteenâs Streets of Philadelphia which is from 1994 on a recent Magic Lunchbox).
There is a lot of overlap between Triple M and Gold, Gold and Smooth, and Magic and 3MP. Bryan Adamsâ Heaven can be heard on all these stations on regular rotation.
Yeah thereâs some overlap - but KIIS, Nova and Hit are indistinguishable from each other. Their playlists would be 80% the same.
Also while Smooth is 80s and 90s heavy they play plenty of songs in the 2000âs and 2010âs. (e.g. Adele, Lewis Capaldi, Timberlake, Beiber to name just a few!)
