I think that both these presenters are good operators. It feels like the 90’s again. The great battle for night time radio might be returning.

I like this, not rushing into it. Learning from SCA’s mistakes hopefully.
Where did you get it?
Sooo, I’ve been thinking a lot during the last week about the news that 97.3 FM is going to adopt the KIIS naming. I can’t say that I’m stoked that it’s happening, mainly because I worry that adopting the KIIS naming will open the door to 97.3 FM becoming more like KIIS 106.5 Sydney and KIIS 101.1 Melbourne - and to me that is a not a good thing.
In my mind I group the major Brisbane radio stations into the following list:
- Nova & b105 are the new music stations
- Triple M is the rock/sport station
- ABC Brisbane and 4BC are the talkback stations of various flavours
- Triple J is the youth alternate music station
- 4KQ and 4BH are the older music stations (with 4KQ obviously doing the classic hits and 4BH now settling back into easy listening again)
- 97.3 FM is almost like this bridge between the older music stations and the new music stations (their whole positioner being 'Brisbane’s Widest Variety of Music from the 80s to Now).
I mainly listen to a combination of 4KQ (on DAB+ or streaming) and 97.3 FM (especially the breakfast show which I’ve been listening to for over 15 years, mainly for Terry Hansen). I also don’t mind listening to 4BH and River949 Ipswich sometimes too. Nova & b105 are basically non starters for me.
So while my main diet of music is from 70s to 90s, 97.3 FM has been a way for me to discover newer songs because I sort of use 97.3 FM as a filter - all the new songs start off on Nova & b105 but the new songs that aren’t terrible (mostly) end up filtering down to 97.3 FM after a few months. I can turn on 97.3 FM knowing that most of the songs played I’m going to enjoy and I might occasionally discover a new song that I like without sitting through hours of songs I have no interest in. Not every new song 97.3 FM chooses is a song I like, but I know that even if there’s one not so great song on the next song is likely to be an 80s or 90s song that I do like that’ll make up for it.
This is a sample of the music logs (via Lava) from 97.3 FM and KIIS 106.5 from last Tuesday night from 9pm to 11:15pm AEST

97.3 FM has a bunch of good older stuff in there including '(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life, Drops Of Jupiter, Got My Mind Set On You, Heaven Is A Place On Earth as well as some good newer songs from artists such as Taylor Swift, Jessica Mauboy and Olivia Rodrigo. The KIIS 106.5 playlist is mostly unrecognisable to me - there’s a few good songs I recognise in there, but not the majority. To me, KIIS 106.5 strongly fits into that same Nova/b105 category of new music station that I wouldn’t listen to.
So that’s my worry, that the KIIS branding is going to open up 97.3 FM to move more towards the KIIS 106.5 Sydney/KIIS 101.1 Melbourne playlists and therefore effectively cease being that bridge station and just become another Nova/b105. With the sale of 4KQ also coming up sometime in the next year or so, I’m worried Brisbane is going to lose 2 good stations.
The three things I hang onto as some level of hope is:
- The statement to the media said “97.3 is Brisbane’s #1 station and listeners will continue to hear all of the things they currently love about the station but now with a touch of vibrant KIIS energy.” - hopefully that means what it means and isn’t just empty marketing talk and that the station won’t really change
- That the fact that 97.3 FM was the number 1 station in Survey 8 of 2021 means they don’t want to muck with success too much.
- The fact that there’s already Nova & b105 taking the role of new music station and so why would you want to crowd into the well filled space.
Anyway, not long now, we’ll see what happens I guess.
The fact they have kept a more mature breakfast team is a sign that the changes will be minimal. They might slightly tweak the music, but I don’t think there will be any huge changes.
I dunno if Kip is enough of a draw card to pull some of Nova’s older listeners over. I can see them freshening up the imaging a bit (making it sound less daggy, a bit hotter), perhaps adding some songs with integrated/produced sweepers, but I can’t see them being CHR. Most likely hot AC with some KIIS production elements.
I feel like it’s just a way of selling ads. Nothing more and 97.3 isn’t much of a name anyway so tacking on KIIS doesn’t do much.
My theory is that they’ll move River into being that bridge with a Gold playlist skewing older, along with KIIS97.3 eventually skewing newer to avoid their own two stations directly competing.
How are they identifying themselves on air?
Jeez the show sounds super provincial. Sounds like something out of Geelong or Ballarat. Is this a regular thing in Brisbane?
Ninety Seven Three, so far. Sounds very Hot AC music wise.

The morning hosts for 97.3 in Brisbane are still calling the station as “97.3 FM” & not “KIIS 97.3” yet, even though their sites are branding it as such. As some have said, this does feel like a gradual shift towards KIIS. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
Comedian Eddie Bannon is the new addition. He has appeared on Ali Clarke’s breakfast show on ABC Radio Adelaide before.
I don’t like how they name the show just after one person when there is other co-hosts
A Sandilands as a producer, nepotism, or an unfortunate last name?
My understanding was that they are distant relatives, but a RadioInfo article says otherwise.
Regardless, Shaun has worked for ARN in Brisbane since before K&J moved over.
Like the Marty Sheargold Show? Moonman in the Morning? The Christian O’Connell Show? It’s nothing new. It usually means they are the draw card (or have the biggest ego).
Interesting, Ali has been popular and Mix is a strong station so this should go well.
I suspect they are paying alot of money for Clarke and have been for Phillips so expectations will be high.
@AustralianAerial is that a mock or by ARN?
Looks to be official from ARN - https://www.973fm.com.au/
