Kayo Sports

I doubt there will be IP filtering so a VPN won’t be required, just signing up with a different address however I don’t see it as a technical issue unless on dodgy NBN infrastructure. I’ve been on Starlink for a year at least and had no issues with any of our streaming services, they have worked flawlessly and much better and faster than what they would have done on our FTTN connection.

By all means piss your money against the wall.

I’m just saying. Trust me, I’m used to pissing money against the wall. But someone has to be the devils advocate/hopeful one.

Geographic discrimination on pricing/service availability is acceptable and a natural part of business where it can be proven that there is an increased cost to the business of being able to provide that service to the area, especially if it’s a physical good or product or a face to face service- hence why things like that are naturally more expensive in remote areas or for some things not offered to that area at all.

With a purely internet-based service however, it is a real stretch to me to suggest that supplying the Kayo/Binge etc service to customers in very remote Australia would cost them even a cent more than it would to supply to someone living in Sydney or Melbourne. Given that it appears that it is likely the alternative service offered is going to be IP driven anyway, I have to question whether this argument would hold up to any scrutiny.

Sadly though, while certainly highly unethical, I do doubt that Foxtel is in technical breach of any laws here. I do hope that the ACCC takes an interest in this case however- there is a chance it could be considered an unfair trade practice unless Foxtel can somehow come up with evidence that it does cost them more to service that “very remote customers”.

Ultimately though I cannot see this going well for Foxtel in the long term- their brand is already on the nose and the last thing they can afford to do is to peeve more people off and lose subscribers altogether.

This. This is what I’m getting at.

Worth noting though they have rolled this restriction out for Flash, Binge and Lifestyle as well. Now discounting Flash because surely that is a very niche audience anyway, I would imagine the majority of viewing on Binge and Lifestyle would be on demand, not live.

Yeah pretty sure the only extra cost may be in the support - and debatable whether they’d get more calls/complaints about people not getting the service at all than a few buffering issues. Unless they are in cahoots with Starlink to limit pressure on their service?? Will Netflix be next to limit access from ‘very remote areas’. I doubt it.
Ultimately this stinks of a cash grab.
It would not cost Hubbl (the streaming arm) one bit extra to deliver the service - the customer is the one paying for the internet connection and they would still be just accessing the nearest available CDN point.

Exactly

This whole thing is getting more and more bizarre by the day.

Now some of the postcodes that were originally included as being part of “very remote Australia” (which actually included many peri-urban areas in regional Queensland) have been since removed from their list of affected postcodes.

I have to wonder- for the administrative cost and burden (and brand equity damage) this is causing, just how much money/resources are being saved (if any at all)?

There was always a danger with using postcodes that you capture some stuff that perhaps didn’t intend to (postcodes are only good for the delivery of mail and nothing else)

Today had an expert on this morning to talk about the increasing costs of subscription services, and essentially advocated for people to take up club memberships (obviously relatively well known) as a way to save on Kayo’s price increases.

Thought that was interesting.

Really? What if your club doesnt offer one?

Swans don’t.
Knigjts don’t.

How about the players, leagues and clubs stop putting upward pressue on broadcasting rights fees, forcing Kayo et al to increase subscription fees.

I point blank refuse to pay a rival any membership fees just for cheaper Kayo. Gisnts can fuck themselves.

Did the Today Show mention about previous Stan Sport price hikes? I’m guessing not

What if you don’t like going to the pub?

What a waste of air time.

No wonder people pirate.

I was only vaguely listening, but I seem to recall them saying something along the lines of using this as a way to save even if it wasn’t your club.

Of course not, but I believe they did talk about the wider impact of the rising costs of all streaming services - not just sports.

It was one of a few free suggestions, a light-hearted one, and obviously not suited to everyone.

I remember GWS had the cheapest Kayo membership compared to the other AFL teams and they had people from other teams getting that membership. From this season I think all teams have the same Kayo price.

If you are a true fan of your club, you dont give any other club your money. The only exception is if you’re going to their home ground to watch your team play them.

Maybe so, but some mighr have an alcohol ptoblem, or a neurological issue, and going to the pub might be a trigger.

You have think about that and clearly the morons at Today didn’t.

This is to boost the Giants membership numbers. They’re failong out here. The only reason to be a GWS “supporter” is for the cheap Kayo. I live out here, its NRL, football or fuck off. True AFL fans in Sydney know better and are Swans supporters.

GWS can fuck off to Canberra.

Yeah mate I think you’re overthinking this, they were just suggestions and not a one size fits all approach.

No I’m not. I work in a profession where these things do impact others, mainly children. Some people should not be in a pub.

Nine can join GWS and fuck off if they keep doing moronic shit.

You know they’re desperate when they’re effectively spruiking a rival network to get the point across.
And yet if the NRL was on Stan Sports this wouldn’t even be a story on 9, would it?
