Hot Seat

Appearing on Mix94.5 FM’s Pete, Matt & Kymba breakfast show, he gave his views on the show’s curtain call.

“Perth were the ones that weren’t watching,” he told the trio, who said their mums were avid watchers.

“So I am glad your mum was watching!”

Doubling down on the accusation, McGuire joked: “Can I put it . . . to the people of Perth — Channel 9 is on. Turn it on!”

He also said during the segment that he predicted the show would be resurrected one day.

Perth doesn’t watch anything other than Seven.

But realistically loosing Sydney and Melbourne was what brought this to an end.

How about rebooting conentration or hot streak game shows from the 90’s does anyone remember them?

Hot Seat was never a great format. It wasn’t so bad in the 30 minute days (given it was designed to be shorter) but 60 minutes was too long. Should have gone back to the original (and much better) format in my view when that happened.

If the Millionaire brand is bought back at some stage (either before 6pm or in primetime), here’s my suggestion on a tweaked format which I would call “Millionaire Jackpot”.
Rules are pretty similar to the original format (and you could tweak the dollar values on the tree and change lifelines/add a trade option as seen overseas) with the main difference being that the million dollar prize is a baseline that increases by say $10,000 or $20,000 every time a contestant competes (i.e. if a contestant wins on the 55th show, assuming $10,000 is the jackpot amount added each time), the total winner’s prize would actually be $1,550,000.

I think it’ll be Tipping Point that is the most likely replacement, but I’d love to see Wheel of Fortune or The Price is Right make a return (as long as they are better than the 2008 and 2012 reboots respectively).

This continued statement is so tiresome. I lived in Perth 40 years and watched all 3 main stations depending on what took my fancy. My parents still live in Perth and don’t watch 7 News (they watch 9).

This is sour grapes from Eddie because his mediocre quiz show was axed.

Sure, the ratings for Hot Seat are really crud in Perth, but it’s kinda chicken or egg now when it had been moved to 3pm and thus no longer a lead-in to anything.

Tipping Point at 4pm rates a lot better as the lead-in to their “WA First” 5pm news (per the odd day it pops into the OzTAM top 20, like Wednesday), and I’m sure that must grate Eddie as to why they didn’t bother switching the two around - and it’ll be interesting if they do that to whatever replaces it in 2024, the same way it is in Adelaide.

The numbers in Adelaide, where they were the other way around (Hot Seat at 4, before local news at 5), suggested there was a little life, but it almost suggests it was only being watched at that point because it was a lead-in and little else. Sounds like the right time to put it on the shelf.

I think you have summed it up quite well. They took a format which worked fine in the 30-minute window and stretched it to make a 60-minute show simply to match what Seven were doing with The Chase. It just feels so slow and the padding is very obvious, particularly the Fastest Finger First format.

It would not surprise me if Nine looked to have some more Millionaire specials or a short run of original format episodes at some stage. I think given some time off the air and possibly a change in host, they may be able to bring the original format back to some success like seen in the US or Britain.

He has hosted and called AFL matches on Seven in non-Victorian markets before (i.e. Fox Footy simulcasts)

Really can’t blame STW in the current state. The problem goes back to the Sunraysia days, the damage was done then. WIN tried and failed. It wouldn’t been so bad if Bond media hadn’t their hand in too many assets (newspaper and TV) that broke the reach agreement. Anyway the coronation street at 5:30pm back in 2005 kinda killed STW and the rest is history.

Has the concept of ‘humour’ made its way over to Perth yet?

What is humorous about it?

I think much like some of the shows that came before it, it was a it’s time factor. Viewers were seeing the same thing over and over.

And this could be a lesson for programmers, having different timeslots in different markets for the same show is sometimes necessary as opposed to blanket national programming where everything is shown at same timeslots in all markets

In Hot Seat’s early days, it would be shown at 5:00pm in Queensland due to its own dedicated current affairs show Extra airing at 5:30pm.

Once that show copped the axe in the midst of a news overhaul at QTQ (which included Andrew Lofthouse replacing Bruce Paige on the weeknight news, and Heather Foord being redeployed to the weekend news) in mid-2009, HS moved to the 5:30pm slot, bringing their schedule in line with all the other major markets.

Being displaced because of news programs isn’t what I am talking about.

With streaming these days, markets like Perth that are 2-3 hours behind could potentially view some shows before they air on TV through streaming elements of the metros.

Streaming was one issue WIN and Nine didn’t agree on

It happens to every successful show. All shows have a lifespan, the same will come with The Chase in coming years.

Programs being displaced isn’t a new thing, even pre-aggregation game shows were often in different timeslots to metro stations.

Pre aggregation, a lot screened Sale Of The Century at 7pm, and those that couldn’t were days behind.

One extreme example I know of, was Press Your Luck airing on Prime at least 12 months after its axing from Seven.

Back on topic, I think Hot Seat could of been retained in a 7:30pm Saturday timeslot, but then the cost probably wouldn’t be justified given the limited audience it would attract at that time.

He’s clearly not berating Perth for not watching. It’s a joke.

Yes please

Although it would be great to have it return to the 7pm slot, times have sadly changed and can’t see that happening. Id be happy to see it in the 5.30pm slot too.

Would a reboot of Sale work in the 5.30pm timeslot?
