Great to see WWTBAM back in the traditional game show with a celebrity format

Interesting tactic. The celebrity specials will be up against the new season premiere of The Amazing Race Australia and possibly the debut of Holey Moley. Nine will be hoping these two episodes will draw a crowd and potentially cause a ratings upset.

I wonder if Nine is using this opportunity as a trial for the original WWTBAM format to be more of a permeant fixture in the future? The recent US and UK revivals have been quite successful.

I really donā€™t think a revival of the original ā€œMillionaireā€ format is likely to be as successful here in Australia as it has been overseas, because weā€™ve had a slight variant of the format on-screen for five nights a week since 2009.

Besides, have people here forgotten how drawn out and boring the original ā€œMillionaireā€ format used to be? Eddie always teased how the answers would be revealed after an ad break and sometimes, thereā€™d only be two or three questions during an hour long episode! No wonder the show was frequently spoofed on comedy shows (back when we still had some on Australian TV) back in the dayā€¦

Agree, the WWTBAM format is a more serious quiz show, Iā€™m sure there wonā€™t be anywhere near the level of banter and ā€œDad jokesā€ from Eddie on this version.

Canā€™t see these prime time specials attracting a huge audience unless they promote half a million or more is about to go off. The format is tired and tedious. I find it excruciating to sit through the stream of contestants who appear on the show who canā€™t answer basic trivia questions yet think theyā€™re good good enough to guess their way to big money. I like my quiz shows a bit faster paced. A reboot of The Weakest Link wouldā€™ve been preferable. Hell, Iā€™d probably even choose to watch a revival of Keynotes with Richard Wilkins rather than be strung along by Eddie for one hour plus.

Question is, who would be able to cut it as host?

Paul Murray. He is more than capable of telling everyone they are the weakest link.

Sam Newman, he can be pretty horrible to people!

Iā€™ve said it before and Iā€™ll say it again: Lee Lin Chin.

Anyway, back to Millionaire. The original format was such a major hit 1999 because it was very different to any other game/quiz show on television at that time. The darker theme and addition of background music to add tension (ideas which of course would later be adopted by just about every other game/quiz show on television) made for a refreshing change from the typically light and airy look/feel of most game/quiz shows during the 1990s.

But the pace of the world has sped up considerably in the last two decades or so. I think weā€™re going to want considerably zippier television programming formats to reflect that reality in 2021.

Yes!! Perfect.

Always thought Gretel Killeen would have been good for a weakest link reboot.
