Hit Network

Ryan Tothill has been made redundant from his CD gig at 2Day.

Never good news to see redundancies, and not to say the role hasn’t changed and evolved over the years in this industry, but is there really much local content beyond breakfast (of course Fox does host C&T and other network shows) in each capital to justify having CDs?

Perhaps they’re trying to remove duplication in the content area, no doubt leading to more work for others.

In another market like WA, where the CD already oversees Hit/Triple M Metro and Regional (I think?) it’s hard to imagine that role going.

Would they go that far over east?

In other radio news, the Jimmy and Nath Show with Emma is gone, at least in it’s current form.

Instagram accounts for J&N and J&N+E have both been nuked. 2Day Instagram scrubbed of the show’s content.

At least it was because of their personal decision instead of some higher-ups making it.

Today has not been a normal day for radio. Everyone is gone everywhere.

My sources say otherwise. I’ll be interested to see whether the media go ‘there’ or not.

You don’t immediately leave a radio show and have any mentions of you removed from the website, podcast and socials when it’s your decision.

So Many Departures! Something is going on we dont know about I think.

And here it is today. Could have used any other reason but that’s what we’ve publicly gone with.

Privately is another question. The annual merry-go-round continues.

Why was that necessary? At least Jimmy and Nath could have kept their Instagram account.

Interested to hear what former and current female producers think of this decision.

Didn’t they have a bijillion followers on there too? Strange decision, unless there’s more to come out in the wash.

What a busy old day in Australian radio hey…

From one of the few still remaining at 2Day, the whole thing has essentially imploded. It’s in a holding position now while they work out what to do.

2day fm is a lost cause and nothing they do seems to work. They have tried different formats and various combinations in breakfast without success.

Maybe they just need to gut it completely and network a breakfast show in from either Brisbane or Melbourne, and dayparts too until K&J retire / leave and then resuscitate it.

Will be interesting to hear the Gamechangers podcast tomorrow. Will it be another episode recorded on a Tuesday that completely misses the weeks news, or could we actually get an emergency pod…

My suggestion is to just retire the 2DayFM name, change the format and rename it to Heart 104.1 based on the DAB Station.

Retire the 2DayFm name absolutely, but they need a Hit Network station in Sydney rather than a standalone Heart station. If they went with Hit they can network the regional Hit Network Breakfast and Dayparts into Sydney.

Make it an ultra low cost operation and they can then keep a Hit Network station in the Sydney market. The market won’t reset until K&J leave so put 2day fm into hibernation because nothing will work until then.

If I had full control of 2Day FM, I would completely blow it up. Have a complete name change (Heart) and cater for the 25 to 54 females. I would have a similar music format as Breeze FM NZ.

SCA Head of Broadcast Content Matthew O’Reilly Was on the Game Changers podcast last week and when questioned said that the commercial reality of most agency buys being from Sydney meant that a Hit network station in Sydney was crucial for the rest of the network - particularly the networked shows which make them a lot of money.

However, now that they have Heart, there could be some merit to this. Heart can target the Smooth/Gold audience and they could still have Carrie and Tommy who could still fit into a softer, older station without any changes. They need a big change (followed by impeccable consistency) and some noise to be heard in the market - and a relaunch to Heart would be exactly that. It can still be hit network for sales purposes, but stand alone for audience and content outside a few key shows.

If 2Day goes Heart, I wonder if ARN will react with their heavy iHeart branding? Quite confusing.

Sounds awful. Lucky you aren’t in any control.

That is a tricky one. After all, ARN are only licensing the iHeartRadio branding here. Heart Radio is ambiguous in that there is also a UK network by the same name.
