Not really much of a revelation there, he’s had arguably a bigger for some time now with his 7 News work and Dancing with the Stars.
Interesting what doesn’t fly at FOX is par-for-the-course at KIIS with K&JO, apparently.
Was she dumped because of broadcasting standards, or station standards?
Broadcasting standards I think.
Heard this on 2Day this afternoon before the latest Tate McRae track:“You won’t hear this on Nova or KIIS”.
I thought I heard that… thank you for confirming.
Interesting.
Craig Bruce is such a flog, going on a rant about Hughesy making a few jokes about his old show and taking everything personally. Christ he must be fun at parties, man has no sense of humour. All he does is speak in quotes and jargon.
Thought it was a little harsh in parts but also having worked at that network, a little spot on as well.
Yeah, Hughesy was clearly just unloading on a former job/employer in the comedic way he does, and Craig took the bait big time. Felt a bit overblown for me, and even his co-hosts seemed to disagree more than usual (which they almost never do).
I reckon Hughesy should offer to be a guest on their pod in the next few weeks and answer a few of the charges, might be some great listening.
CB has all the traits of an idiot boss, I couldn’t imagine having to work under that and hear the crap he spouts.
Big Fail from Craig in that segment. Not only on the words he used, but his demeanour throughout that conversation.
Seems like he heard a lighthearted chat on a CHR drive show and mistaken it for an in-depth industry interview.
In saying that though, Craig now has a podcast of his own to fill with content. So whos not to say he hammed this up a bit
Are we referring to how Hughesy said he HAD to interview guests he didn’t want to interview whilst at 2DayFM Breakfast? CB goes on to talk about how Martin-Molloy refused to interview Brian Adams back in the day when he was the biggest touring artist in the country & MM was the biggest radio show.
IMO on that front, I do agree with CB and whoever the CD is at the station. Announcers refusing or being unhappy to do certain interviews can be frustrating - it is unnecessary pushback.
In saying that, for this specific example of Hughesy at 2DayFM, the problem was made up of multiple other factors - including the fact the station had absolutely no direction at the time. They didn’t know if they were targeting mums, kids or families. From memory, half of the former 2DayFM Breakfast segments were quite mediocre and you could foresee it never gaining ground on K&J.
Even to this day, just compare K&J’s $5m Dawn Dig with 2Day’s Kendrick & SZA payoff. Incomparable. SCA need to invest more into getting bigger “wow” moments at 2Day. Not just in breakfast, but for the whole station. The closest they’ve done in doing this, is their “Today AF” campaign. That actually makes people stop and think “wow, something’s changed there”.
Flying one listener overseas just didn’t have as much “wow” impact to show listeners, “Hey, we’ve changed formats. Listen now.”
2Day is still running Million Dollar Postcode Bingo. The Kendrick & SZA comp is like a Tier 2 comp.
That said, Kendrick & SZA was way more on-target for the younger audience. Sure, I’m sure 20-year-old Lucy from Penrith would love to win a million dollars, but when launching a new format and trying to say, “Hey, look over here—we’re targeting you now,” the Kendrick & SZA comp was perfect. It’s an experience not everyone gets. Flying to LA, hotel paid for, spending money, and seeing Kendrick & SZA live? That would cost thousands of dollars out of your own pocket.
We also know these million-dollar comps are overhyped anyway. I don’t think listeners are dumb—they know the chances of winning are a million to one. Even though KJ gave their winner a new car, it still felt like a bit of an anti-climax. I certainly wasn’t “wowed.” Yes, you always hope to get that true “wow” moment with someone winning the full cash prize, but it’s like a one-in-a-hundred shot at best.
And for context no one from the station knows where the money is. Only someone from the insurance company does. So you can’t even rig/try to funnel someone in the right direction to get that “winning” moment.

It’s what happens when you have hosts & programming which doesn’t align with the overall sound & strategy of the station. Similarly to when Jimmy & Nath and Mike E & Emma were doing a youthful show playing adult hits.
If it was “Hughesy’s show” do you think Erin would have been on it? It clearly wasn’t his and he didn’t have the sway to just do whatever he wanted, the format was wrong, the talent was wrong. It got what it deserved.
I’m not convinced the current approach will do any better either.
I would have gone harder on adult contemporary with a female skew to complement MMM, or take on Gold with the 35-55 demo. A much bigger pool to target and ones who spend money.
I don’t think that would work either. Come 4pm 2day fm’s format would flip completely as the rest of the Hit network is skewing younger than it did 1-2 years ago.
I think their best chance is to still break the Hits first, but broaden the playlist. At the moment the same songs get repeated every two hours and that is quite tiring.
That’s the format of hit music stations, 90min-2hour windows of the same top songs.
The new format for 2Day is definitely the best it has sounded since the 80s to now format change in Jan 2018.
They are not only playing new music before KIIS and Nova play it, but their throwbacks are a lot better for example Gorillaz and Hilltop Hoods.
Really should have changed the name to Hit1041 if they were going to blow it up
2DayFM has a high degree of brand recognition, as does Fox FM , B105 and SAFM.
Hit1041 was generally associated with being a failure.
